Mobile Game Spotlight – Soda Dungeon 2 | Game Rant

In today’s day and age, people are constantly on the move and looking for the next big thing. At times it can be difficult to find time to sit down and devote to one video game, and that’s where mobile games come into play. Though they are often simple and mindless, every now and then a hidden gem will appear on the app store to surprise gamers with unexpected levels of depth, something that Soda Dungeon 2 accomplishes well. For those players looking for a new mobile game to sink some down time into, this could be just the answer.

Soda Dungeon 2 doesn’t require players to have any knowledge about the original Soda Dungeon, so players shouldn’t let that “2” at the end scare them off. In fact, the two games are mostly identical, with the second featuring a few more in quality of life changes, in depth mechanics, and more detailed artwork. Though Soda Dungeon 2 certainly isn’t a technical marvel or a feat of video game engineering, its unique premise and take on certain RPG tropes makes it an enjoyable way to kill time, as the game always ensures players feel like they’re progressing.

The premise of Soda Dungeon 2 is simple, and those familiar with the rogue-like genre will catch on quick. Players find themselves inside a town with nothing but a tavern being overlooked by a huge dungeon. Inside this tavern, patrons called Soda Junkies are hanging out, and the Barkeeper reveals that they can be hired to take on threats inside the dungeon. With the allure of Soda and Gold, players hire the Soda Junkies and try and make it as far as they can in the dungeon, bringing back spoils that allow them to further upgrade their town, buy new sodas to attract different character classes, and in turn make it even further the next time.

Waiting atop floor 100 is the Dark Lord, the main recurring antagonist of the game’s loose story. Though his wacky humor doesn’t always land right, he does provide a challenge early on in the game. Along the way, players will find new items and equipment they can use to increase their team’s HP and attack power, and eventually they should grow strong enough to beat the Dark Lord. That isn’t where the story ends, though, as he escapes through a portal into a different dimension, prompting the player character to follow him through. This multidimensional travel is where the game really kicks off.

In total there are 11 dimensions for players to traverse in Soda Dungeon 2. Inside the dungeon they are identical with the exception of a new and more powerful boss appearing 100 floors later. The scenery outside is a little different, but the big change is that although players reset their progress (lose all gold, sodas, and items), they unlock a new way to get stronger. Between each dimension, players can select a relic that provides permanent boosts to their party, these relics never go away and the resources players invest in leveling them up don’t either.

In order to climb all the way to floor 200 and defeat the boss of dimension 2, players are going to want to select the Attack Relic and level it up a bit. This will ensure that their damage is able to keep up with the more threatening monsters they’ll face from floor 100 to 200, and hopefully allow them to beat the boss as well. Players will also need to strategically select their party members from a list of 11 different character classes to overcome the unique challenges that each dimension boss will throw at them. All in all its a surprising amount of depth and content for a mobile game.

After beating the final dimension boss on floor 1000 of the dungeon, players will receive their final relic and be transported to the Warrior Dimension. In this world there is no end to the dungeon, allowing players to climb as high as they want and grow their strength to ridiculously high numbers. Players that enjoy idle games and seek out those high numbers will love this portion of the game, as it provides endless possibility for growth. In a way, the first ten dimensions act as a really long prologue for this final dimension.

To be fair, the Warrior Dimension isn’t for everybody. Some players may find the incremental grind through the first 10 dimensions to be really enjoyable but still shy away from the mathematical aspects of the Warrior Dimension. From here on out, the game becomes more about maximizing efficiency of Gold and Essence gain, clearing as many floors per hour (FPH) as possible with an optimized team, and grinding for the sake of grinding. There are plenty that love this type of thing, but likely an equal number that will want to put the game down and move on to something else after getting this far.

Soda Dungeon 2 is completely free to download and play, but like most mobile games it does allow in-app purchases. The nice thing about this is everything that players can buy with real money is also available through in game currency, though it will take a while of playing before players are able to build up that much gold. For example, ads can be removed for a few dollars, but players can instead opt to save up 500 million gold in order to remove them as well.

For those that want to spend a little bit of money on the game in order to support the developer, the best things to buy are the ad removal bundle and the magic clock. When the Magic Clock is active, the game moves at twice its normal rate, making it much quicker to grind through certain parts of the game and doubling the player’s FPH in the Warrior Dimension. Soda Dungeon 2 is also available on Steam, so those that would rather not leave their phone occupied for long periods of time can take that route as well.

Soda Dungeon 2 is available now on Mobile and PC.
