The Game Boy Color was a handheld device that grew to prominence in the late 90s to early 2000s. It’s a device that was backward compatible with original Game Boy games. In many cases, the Game Boy Color enhanced video games in 8-bit graphics.
With the potential to display outstanding graphics on a handheld system, the Game Boy Color was a powerhouse of its time. The system’s best-selling game Pokémon Gold and Silver grossed approximately 23 million units. Even today, games on the Game Boy Color have graphics that hold up. Let’s take a look at some of the system’s most visually appealing games that defined an era.
10 Donkey Kong Country
Before his trip to home consoles, Donkey Kong on arcade was considered a Nintendo villain. Of course, players now love this amiable character despite his controversial past.
The jungle atmosphere of the Donkey Kong Country series adds much to the gameplay. Donkey Kong Country released for the Game Boy Color back in 2000 and the Super Nintendo Entertainment System in 1994. Developed by Rare, this game was an instant-masterpiece.
9 Wario Land 3
The Wario Land game series released its third main series entry in the Game Boy Color’s last few active years. It is one of the handfuls of games to release for the Game Boy Color and not the system’s white and black predecessor, the Game Boy. Wario Land 3 provides an engaging experience that is supplemented with phenomenal graphics. The varying environments and gameplay make it outstanding.
8 Harvest Moon GB
Harvest Moon‘s objective is to renovate a farm and turn it into a booming agriculture location. It’s the second game to come from the Story of Seasons franchise. Harvest Moon GB was later released for the Game Boy Color with color support. The graphics of Harvest Moon GB significantly improved on Harvest Moon GBC. The environments are undoubtedly more beautiful when enhanced on the Game Boy Color.
7 Mario Tennis
It’s the second Mario Tennis game in the series and the first to be released on a handheld console. Mario Tennis features a story mode where players can play as Nina or Alex. The player’s purpose is to defeat Mario, the top tennis player.
This Game Boy Color game released in 2001, one of the later games in the Game Boy Color’s lifespan. It was released when Mario Tennis was more than a mere tennis game, containing dialogue and dynamic gameplay.
6 Resident Evil Gaiden
This action-adventure game places players in the shoes of Leon Kennedy. Resident Evil Gaiden uses a top-down perspective, switching to the first-person view during combat. The gameplay style was a unique take on the Resident Evil series, but the game received mixed reviews from critics. Despite being a game with gameplay that didn’t measure up to its namesake, Resident Evil Gaiden has excellent artwork for a Game Boy Color game.
5 Super Mario Bros. Deluxe
Super Mario Bros. Deluxe is an enhanced port of the original Super Mario Bros for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). The enhancements included more levels, unlockables, and better graphics. Super Mario Bros. Deluxe was the definitive game of its generation, ushering in unprecedented detail in graphics. It’s not surprising that the Game Boy Color was a massive success. Games like Super Mario Bros. Deluxe took art design to new heights.
4 Pokémon Gold/Silver/Crystal
The second generation of the main series Pokémon games solidified it as a prominent franchise. The art direction might not be the most creative, but there is a level of polish not seen in other Game Boy Color games.
Each game differs based on the Pokémon contained in it and the move sets of Pokémon. At times, Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal are atmospheric in places like The Ruins Of Alph, Mt. Mortar, and the Lake of Rage. Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal are some of the most beautiful games to land on Game Boy Color.
3 The Legend Of Zelda: Oracle Of Ages/Seasons
The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons are two games released simultaneously for the Game Boy Color. The story revolves around Link with a different sequence of events for each game. Released in 2001, these games contain graphics that were considered exceptional. It was initially proposed that three games with interconnected stories would launch on the Game Boy Color. Ultimately, one was scrapped, and The Legend of Zelda: Oracle of Ages/Seasons released.
2 The Legend Of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX
The Game Boy Color version of The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, called The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, is a re-release of the blockbuster game. Notable changes from the original include color graphics and an exclusive dungeon. This game was recently remade for the Nintendo Switch. It stands as one of the most visually appealing games to grace the Game Boy Color.
1 Metal Gear Solid
Also known as Metal Gear Solid: Ghost Babel in Japan, the series debut on a portable handheld console was met with critical acclaim. The conversion of a 3D experience into a 2D game was seamless. This game uses an overhead camera view that was used for Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake. Metal Gear Solid contained stealth combat before it was trendy. This game stood out for its diverse selection of gadgets and visual design.
