Overwatch Experimental Mode Patch Testing Multiple Character Nerfs

Overwatch players may want to prepare for a few heroes to leave the game’s current meta, or at the very least become less viable than they currently are. In the latest Overwatch patch, two damage heroes and a support hero are weakened, with the experimental changes ranging from slight to significant.

In a previous Overwatch experimental patch, the tanks Reinhardt and D.Va were noticeably buffed, with the former quickly being seen as overpowered to many. However, these changes are purely focused on making characters in question less powerful, and the first nerf being tested via this experimental update comes to the latest Overwatch hero: Echo.

While Blizzard claims to be happy with her damage to “squishier” targets, it adds that “she was performing too well against high health targets, such as tanks.” Seemingly doing too much damage to the previously overpowered Reinhardt and his fellow bulky heroes, Echo’s tri-shot has been lowered from 15 shots to 12 before each reload. Her focusing beam duration was also lowered from 2.5 seconds to 2, making her less likely to decimate tanks with the special skill.

Next up, the Overwatch mascot Tracer sees a key change made to her pulse pistols. While the speedy damage-dealer is one of Overwatch’s deadliest close-quarters killers, Blizzard’s testing saw she was proving to be too dangerous at mid-range. In response, her signature weapons have seen their falloff range changed from 13-23 meters to 12-20 meters. Going forward, this change should make Tracer stick to fighting directly in front of her targets as opposed to doing battle from a distance, with Blizzard sharing the goal of “making her less threatening at mid-range.”

The final nerf is for the peaceful monk Zenyatta, with the support hero being hit with changes to his special orbs. Blizzard cites the hero being “too effective at team-wide damage” due to the power and speed of his Orb of Discord ability. As such, the projectile speed has been dropped from 120 to 90, matching his primary fire. Damage amplification was lowered from 30 percent to 25 percent as well, and the same speed changes have been applied to the Orb of Harmony. With such large changes, it is safe to say that the character’s nerf in this patch is the most substantial of the three.

Though these Zenyatta changes may be seen as necessary by many, hopefully he finally gets some extra lore in the upcoming Overwatch 2 to compensate. Regardless, it will be interesting to see if these changes leave experimental mode or enter the live game, as player response will have a major impact on whether the nerfs stick.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
