Animated Series From Walking Dead Creator Gears Up for Amazon Release

Amazon just released a teaser for its upcoming animated superhero series Invincible from Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman, based on his comic of the same name. While it appears to be geared primarily towards an adult audience, fans of his zombie-infested series may find the tonal shift a bit unexpected.

Kirkman announced the series premiere and helped unveil the teaser during a livestream celebrating the anniversary of his original Invincible comic, giving fans a taste of what the show has in store. Featuring a father and son bonding over shared superpowers, as well as an art style that may feel comfortably familiar to fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender and the deceptively original The Legend of Korra, the trailer sets the stage for what appears to be a down-to-earth and relatable superhero story.

Invincible follows Mark Grayson, a young man of 17 who seems pretty average for his age, except he just so happens to be the son of famous and powerful superhero Omni-Man (though perhaps it will take a less controversial take on the idea than The Boys did with Homelander). Unsurprisingly, the younger Grayson begins to develop powers of his own, and begins to slowly realize how much deeper his father’s legacy goes than just that of a beloved hero. Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) will voice the 17-year-old budding super while J.K. Simmons (Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy) takes on the role of his father, Nolan Grayson.

The comic first premiered in the early 2000s and boasted an impressive 15-year run before ending in 2018. Created by Kirkman along with artists Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley, it attracted a respectable and loyal following during its time. Its popularity was apparently widespread enough to even earn periodic nods in the animated series King of the Hill as well as references and a full-on cameo from its 3 creators in the 2011 Simon Pegg and Nick Frost sci-fi comedy Paul.

Invincible appears to be following the lead of many of its contemporaries in taking a more introspective look at the superhero genre. Similar to stories like Spider-Man, the focus seems to be on the main character dealing with newfound powers during a developmental time in life, possibly using superpowers as a thinly-veiled allegory for the changes young people tend to deal with at that age. While it may not seem the freshest of ideas, it can still be a relatable story for many in the audience. Besides, what will really determine its effectiveness is its execution of these ideas.

New viewers may not be initially impressed by the idea, but hopefully the show’s familiar animation style and star-studded voice cast will complement a gripping story and endearing group of characters. Even during what appears to be a golden age for 2D animated showsInvincible still has a shot to stand out in the crowd.

Invincible will premiere on Prime Video on March 26, 2021.
