Call of Duty: What is Hip Fire? | Game Rant

Call of Duty has been going strong for over seventeen years since the first launched in 2003, but the series really got coming with Call of Duty: Modern Warfare in 2007. While the series has certainly evolved and grown, much of the core DNA has remained the same when it comes to gameplay, progression, perks, attachments, and more. However, whether someone is a seasoned pro at the game or coming into the newest entry, the relatively well-received Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, knowing the intricate details of the game can help in gaining the upper hand in a gunfight.

One such detail could be, for example, hip fire. Understanding what hip fire is and how it can help in different situations can be the difference between life and death in any Call of Duty game.

Hip fire is firing a weapon while not aiming down the sight or optics (red dot, sniper scope in Warzone, etc) of a weapon. In most situations, a player will the left trigger on a controller to aim down sights to target an enemy and will then use the right trigger to fire the gun. Hip firing bypasses the aiming down the sights to target the enemy and simply fires the weapon. It is much less accurate.

In situations in which the enemy is at distance, aiming down sights is almost always recommended. The guns are designed to be more accurate while aiming and the sights and or optics will make it so that targeting the enemy is much easier. However, when in close-quarters situations in Call of Duty, hip firing can be extremely beneficial. The enemy moves much quicker up close, and therefore staying on target is easier while shooting “from the hip.” Additionally, close-quarters situations often lead to surprise engagements. Being at the ready with hip firing accuracy can often do the trick more efficiently than attempting to line up a kill shot.

When creating a weapon in the Gunsmith in Call of Duty: Warzone, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, or Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, one may notice that some attachments may help or hinder hip fire. With long-ranged scenarios, hip fire is not important. Therefore, when using Marksman Rifles, Sniper Rifles, and in most situations LMGs, hip fire should not be a priority. When building out those types of weapons and when firing the weapon itself, aiming down sights is the way to go. Assault rifles can be used in any situation, which is why they can be so flexible.

On the contrary, when using an up-close SMG in Call of Duty or a shotgun, for example, the playstyle dictates a lot of run and gunning and close-quarters combat. Therefore, hip fire usage will be needed. Of course, aiming down sights will be needed in a lot of situations as well. SMG play will still require quite a lot of aiming down sights, but there will be plenty of moments where hip fire usage is the best way to go, and at that moment it can save the day. Lastly, there are pistols that have dual-wielding abilities as well, which take away the ability to aim down sights. This means that the only way to shoot is to hipe fire.
