When deciding whether or not to buy a game, many players read reviews to see whether or not it will be worth their time. Typically speaking, these come from trusted reviewers online or even from close friends, but very few people took that step when it came to Among Us. Suddenly exploding online thanks to Twitch streamers, the game took the world by storm almost immediately and has stuck around since then. Despite this, iconic Late Night show host Conan O’Brien decided to share his opinions on it, and they may surprise players.
Among Us is an incredibly simple game, but that’s part of the charm. Essentially a board game dressed up as a video game, players run around and complete tasks while trying to avoid getting killed by an impostor. O’Brien discussed his thoughts about the game while on the Good Game Nice Try podcast after being asked by one of the podcast hosts.
O’Brien’s answer was simple, he thinks it’s a bad game, but in reality much of what he said was in jest. He goes on to explain that O’Brien knows next to nothing about video games and is very bad at them, but that he relishes in sharing his uninformed opinions about them for the sake of frustrating those that do. This isn’t the only reason that O’Brien gives Among Us a bad review, however, as it actually stems from an experience he had playing the game himself with his son.
O’Brien describes that he played Among Us with his son at a socially distanced hangout, and actually managed to win against them as an impostor. To him, this is a sign that the game is too easy, as he believes there should be no way he can win without knowing what’s going on. Before remembering that he’s actually played it, he tries to guess at what the game might be about, and this hilarious answer is what follows “My guess is it’s a bunch of crocheted blip blops and blurp beeps that live together, and whoever’s yarn holds up for the longest time is the winner.”
O’Brien and the podcast hosts all had a good laugh about the ordeal, and it’s obvious that his jabs are all in good fun. While a negative review can sometimes be discouraging for developers, especially small ones like InnerSloth, it should rest easy knowing that most gamers don’t go to Conan O’Brien for their reviews.
Among Us is available now on Mobile and PC.
