Control: Ultimate Edition’s PS5, Xbox Series X Release Date Confirmed

Coming at the tail end of the PS4 and Xbox One generation, some players have been waiting for the next-gen versions of Remedy’s Control to arrive before entering the world of The Oldest House. Today, players received some good news, as Control: Ultimate Edition now has a release date.

An announcement earlier today confirmed that Control: Ultimate Edition will be available as one of February’s PlayStation Plus games, allowing players to experience the unique setting and the fun powers of protagonist Jesse Faden on the PlayStation 5. The PlayStation 4 version of the game will also be included, and Control: Ultimate Edition provides access to both The Foundation and AWE expansions. The game will be available to PS Plus members for free starting on February 2.

Control joins the party game Destruction AllStars and Concrete Genie in next month’s lineup, with the former free for Plus until April 5 and the latter available until March 1 — sharing the same expiration date as Control. For the entire month, Control and all its post-launch content will be free for PS Plus subscribers, with the move functioning as a great way to make up for the controversy started when Control’s next-gen upgrades were first announced.

With players who owned PlayStation 4 and Xbox One copies of Control originally frustrated about needing to buy it again on next-gen consoles, plenty of outrage was leveled in Remedy’s direction. This PS Plus release should certainly make the Ultimate Edition much more appealing for PlayStation players, though with only one console getting free access to the upgraded game, some disappointment will surely still be shared. Though the Xbox Series X version of Control: Ultimate Edition will also arrive on February 2, Xbox users will have to pay the full cost of admission.

A video hyping up the release date of the next-gen versions of Control showcases the new features seen in the upgrade. From a Graphics mode focusing on ray tracing to a Performance mode that boosts the game up to 60 FPS, the game’s visuals look much improved in the PS5 and Xbox Series X version. A follow-up post from Remedy Communications Director Thomas Puha also confirms that Control: Ultimate Edition will make use of exclusive PS5 features like Game Help, Activities, and the DualSense controller, and a separate achievement/trophy list is included for both next-gen versions. Saves will not be transferable.

Control fans can expect physical versions of the Ultimate Edition to arrive on March 2. With several reasons for returning players to revisit the game, and a perfect chance for those who have not experienced Control to give it a try, this major upgrade should prove to be exciting for many.

Control is out now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One, with the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series Ultimate Editions slated to arrive on February 2, 2021.
