2013’s Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons offered a unique twist on cooperative gameplay by making it so a single player could control both playable characters simultaneously. It’s something that’s shown up from time to time in other games like the recent puzzler Morkredd, and it will show up again in a new indie called My Father My Son.
In development at Polish studio Blinkclick Games, the game, like Brothers, will tell an emotionally-charged story of two protagonists. In this case, it’s about a father and son who have grown distant after the sudden death of the boy’s mother. The two take a cruise to try to get closer, only to end up shipwrecked on a strange island and forced to work together in order to survive.
Players will be able to play alone with a friend in local and online co-op and explore a low-poly 2.5D world. Each of the two playable characters will offer unique capabilities to aid them in solving environmental puzzles, with the father’s height and strength allowing him to break down doors and push heavy obstacles, while the son can fit through narrow gaps and climb to otherwise inaccessible locations. With its emphasis on co-op gameplay and exploring familial relationships, My Father My Son looks like it could scratch the itch for fans who have wanted to see a followup to Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.
It will be a while still before that can happen, as the game is currently planned to launch next year. On the plus side, though, fans of co-op games have something to look forward to in the near future. Brothers creator Josef Fares and his studio Hazelight will be releasing their next co-op adventure game, It Takes Two, in less than two months, with the game set to launch on March 26.
My Father My Son is slated to launch in 2022 for PC, with plans for PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X ports at some point after.
