The Witcher 3: A Complete Guide To The “Turn and Face the Strange” Quest

The quest Turn and Face the Strange is only available in the second expansion Blood and Wine. Once Geralt finishes the quest Blood Run, he will encounter a young boy who will hand him a letter. Depending on whom Geralt romanced in the base game, he will get a letter addressed from either from Yennefer or Triss.

If Geralt hasn’t romanced anyone, the letter will always be from Yennefer. Geralt can reward the boy for delivering the letter by giving him 5 crowns. If he does, it will count as proof of Geralt’s generosity and help him in the There Can Only Be One quest since generosity is one of the five virtues important for this quest. So keep that in mind when the option pops up.

5 A Visit To The Cemetery

From the letter, Geralt learns that certain professor Moreau conducted research on witcher mutations and he might have learned something important. Geralt decides to investigate and find professor Moreau’s laboratory.

Once Geralt gets to the cemetery, he finds the professor’s grave. The grave lies west from the fast travel point. Geralt, unfortunately, learns that someone got into the grave before him. He follows the footsteps but the trail goes cold quickly. To continue in the quest, Geralt needs to go into his inventory and look at the old map of Toussaint he got from Yennefer or Triss.

4 Diving Down

Geralt studies the map and goes to the right place. He realizes he will have to dive underwater to get where he’s going. While he’s underwater, he encounters some drowners who endanger him. These aren’t much of a threat, and Geralt can shoot them with his crossbow. Once the drowners die, Geralt can swim toward a portal he discovered underwater. It takes him to a different location. Once he gets there, he has to get over a spike trap. The other option is to climb down. If Geralt climbs down, panther statues will come to life and attack him.

Once Geralt kills the panthers, he should walk until he finds a closed door. To open the door, he will have to shoot several blocks on a wall with his crossbow. If he doesn’t have any crossbow, by chance, there’s one lying around. When the door is open, Geralt can enter another chamber. There are Gargoyle statues aside and a pedestal. Geralt examines his surroundings, one of the statues comes to life and he has to defeat it. When he does, the gargoyle will give up a hand. Geralt should place it on the pedestal.

3 Finding The Right Path

The next part is somewhat confusing and it can take a long time to finish if the player doesn’t know what to do. After Geralt places the hand on the pedestal, portals will open. Geralt should enter the portal on the left, climb down and then climb up to the portal a big statue in the room is facing. He enters the portal, goes to the left until there’s a gap. Geralt jumps over it and enters the portal he discovers there. This portal will take Geralt into professor Moreau’s lab.

2 Searching The Laboratory

Geralt should search the lab. He discovers a Megascope but needs to find its missing crystals. One lies on a desk, another on a bench. Place the crystals on a pillow near the Megascope. Geralt will now have the option to play the recordings on the Megascope. The recordings will reveal that professor Moreau studied witcher mutations in order to cure his son Jerome who was a witcher. But instead of reversing his son’s witcher mutations, he increased them, and Jerome became even stronger.

Geralt can perform the mutation process on himself. But first, he needs to get eggs from a giant centipede. When he kills the centipede hiding in tunnels nearby, he should return back to the lab, place the egg in professor Moreau’s mutation machine, strip his clothes, and go into the machine. Once he does, the mutation process kicks-off, and the mutations become available.

1 Leaving The Laboratory

Once the mutation process is complete, Geralt puts his clothes on, finds the crystal to a portal, activates it with the Aard sign and he leaves. The portal sends him to the lake where he previously dived in, and the quest ends.

Finally, there are a few important details to remember.

If the player completes the quest in New Game+, where the mutations are already available, they will experience points instead.

Geralt will later/before learn what happened to the witcher Jerome during the treasure hunt for the grandmaster griffin gear.

The suggested level for this quest is 35 (during the first playthrough, not on New Game+). It’s a side quest.
