With the recent release of the famed Cyberpunk 2077, players fell in love with its deep systems and long choice-based campaign. It’s art style, sound design, and complex world building all play a major factor in its otherwise wild success. While Cyberpunk 2077 is a renowned game that many have played, some players are now dying for some more.
Once completing the fifty hour campaign; what else awaits players beyond the famous headliner? Players have found CDPR’s latest stint in writing to be a powerful addition to the video game industry. But, thankfully, there are plenty more choice-based story games to play after Cyberpunk 2077.
10 Disco Elysium
A strong art style isn’t all Disco Elysium has going for it. Its opening beckons the player to examine the structure of their minds and the structure of a story.
Playing as Harry Du Bois, detective in the future with past errors haunting his life, players are thrust into a sci-fi world of lies, truth, and the ever present reality of their choices. A story with this much consequence invites players to carefully, or emotionally, decide who they are to those inside the games vast cast of characters.
9 Wasteland 3
The original creators behind the Fallout Franchise return with fire. This isometric RPG set in the strange wasteland of Colorado is a masterpiece in writing. The game immediately throws the player into the fold. Teaching players everything they’ll need to survive this harsh waste. But Wasteland 3 is not just a survival game. With many dialogue options and more characters than previous entries, choices have major effects on the player. A grim look into the future, players must decide its fate.
8 Detroit: Become Human
While combat is not a focus, Detroit: Become Human more than makes up for it. Choices made by players branch into the unknown. But with small choices having drastic consequences, it’s easy for players to need a second try. This video-game encourages several playthroughs in order to see all that Detroit: Become Human has to offer. Set in the near future, players take on three androids with a conscious. What happens next is up to the player.
7 Mass Effect 2
The pinnacle of space adventures begins here. Players take on the role of infamous Commander Shepherd. With his recent return from the dead, he’ll have to assemble a team to take on the ravagers. Characters take the center piece in this entry. Their unique dialogue and relationship to Shepherd (depending on player choice) will drastically effect the outcome of the game and its sequel. New players won’t need to play the first installment of the franchise (though its advised). Instead, Mass Effect 2 explains just enough for new players dive in.
6 Deus Ex: Human Revolution
Considered one of the most popular cyberpunk games, Deus Ex: Human Revolution reveals a thoroughly exciting take. Though options are less, each decision drastically changes the outcome of the game. Players take on the role of Adam Jensen. A cybernetically enhanced human tasked with maintaining security for the illustrious Sarif Industries. But after a recent attack, players are left to ponder the role of industries in society and fundamentally make a difference.
5 Star Wars: The Old Republic
Most would not expect an MMO to have a choice based campaign, but Star Wars: The Old Republic certainly fills the spot. Bioware’s multiplayer adventure features a stellar singleplayer, character driven adventure. The large class stories that drive players through the many worlds of Star Wars is largely individual to each player.
Much like Mass Effect 2, characters matter more than anything. With deep combat and karma systems, the story is up to the player. Also; IT’S FREE!
4 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
This, of course, had to be on the list. The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a highly acclaimed action fantasy RPG. Players take on the role of Geralt Of Rivia. A Witcher tasked with eliminating monsters. Love, sex, and blood await Geralt throughout this definitive journey. Much like CyberPunk 2077 choices are integral to the story and often branch drastically in many different directions. CDProject Red’s other action RPG has set itself as one of the most competent and powerful games of the recent decade.
3 The Outer Worlds
Obsidian’s modern-classic The Outer Worlds uses it’s most powerful weapon; storytelling. While the worlds are not massive and the campaign isn’t more than 25 hours, The Outer Worlds prides itself on being a game of choice. Players are given a deep system to build their characters physically and mentally with choices at the center. But choices have repercussions. Many decisions players make can drastically effect characters and their relationships throughout the story.
2 Divinity: Original Sin 2
Larian Studio’s Divinity: Original Sin 2 is a must-play choice-based RPG for fans of the genre. While science fiction is replaced with fantasy, its large and sprawling worlds filled with unique characters more than make up for it. Players can choose from a set of pre-generated heroes who all have their own unique dialogue and story paths. Or players can choose to create their own from scratch. This huge story based RPG also features a turn based combat system that often reminds players of an incredibly fun board game. Larian Studios’ installment in the franchise is a perfect beginning for players who want a deeper RPG without sacrificing the story.
1 Fallout: New Vegas
The ultimate choice-based game of the last decade is Fallout: New Vegas. Considered the greatest Fallout game to date, players are introduced to the strange and exciting new wasteland by receiving a bullet to the head. Upon awakening in the helpful hands of Doc Mitchell, players are left to decide for themselves. This creative and wild entry in the fallout series was also created by Obsidian Studios. With a large wasteland to master and a classic tale of vengeance to follow, its up to the player who they let live and die.
