New Pokemon Snap Players Will Be Researching Illumina Pokemon

New Pokemon Snap looks like it’s shaping up to be a stellar follow-up to one of the best Pokemon spin-off titles to date. Now that fans know New Pokemon Snap‘s release date is set for April 30, the anticipation is building to see just what exactly New Pokemon Snap has in store for players, and how it will shake things up compared to the original.

Though Nintendo gave glimpses into the new game’s world and setting with the recent trailer for New Pokemon Snap, the company has also been trickling out more information via its social media accounts. Now, Nintendo has revealed via Twitter that players will encounter a newly discovered Pokemon phenomenon in New Pokemon Snap called the Illumina Phenomenon.

Nintendo of America gives a brief synopsis of this new Illumina Phenomenon calling it a “mysterious trend where Pokemon and vegetation have been seen to glow.” Fans can get a glimpse of the Illumina Phenomenon in the recent trailer, where the player character closes his eyes in a forest a night before the surrounding plants begin to glow a faint green color. Then, a massive Meganium appears before the player in their vehicle as the trailer comes to a close. Nintendo goes on to say that Professor Mirror, the Pokemon professor in New Pokemon Snap‘s new region, is researching the phenomenon with the player’s help.

Unfortunately, that’s all the information that Nintendo is willing to give out right now regarding this new phenomenon. Seeing as the release date is still a few months away, it’s not surprising that Nintendo isn’t going all-out on the information for New Pokemon Snap. Still, it looks like New Pokemon Snap will have more to offer players this time around when compared to the original game, and not just in terms of how many more Pokemon will be available to observe and snap pictures of. The original Pokemon Snap on the Nintendo 64 was limited to just a portion of the Generation 1 Pokemon pool, but New Pokemon Snap looks to be offering Pokemon from all eight generations with some sort of story content on top of it all.

It’s safe to assume that the Illumina Phenomenon will play a large role in whatever story plays out in New Pokemon Snap. Players will have to wait and see just what kind of narrative New Pokemon Snap chooses to tell, but more than likely the story will just be a means to drive the gameplay forward. Of course, that’s not a bad thing whatsoever, seeing as Pokemon Snap‘s picture taking and grading system is one of the most fun and engaging activities across all of the Pokemon spin-off titles.

From the information that Nintendo has already given out, it seems like the general structure of the original game’s grading system will remain intact. Though, there will hopefully be some much needed improvements to the actual recognition of the Pokemon captured in player’s photos. If this new title can refine the magic of the original N64 game, then Pokemon fans have a lot to look forward to with New Pokemon Snap.

New Pokemon Snap is set to launch on April 30 for the Nintendo Switch.
