Star Wars has been enrapturing fans for more than 40 years. The franchise is only getting bigger, too. After Disney acquired the property, there’s been a whole new trilogy of movies, and there’s lots of new Star Wars shows in development. It’s natural that fans want games that let them explore the Star Wars galaxy on their own terms. Thankfully, there’s TTRPGs to let players get immersed in settings like this. Dungeons and Dragons doesn’t necessarily adapt smoothly to the Star Wars universe, yet there’s an official Star Wars TTRPGs like Star Wars: Force and Destiny available to fans.
Star Wars: Force and Destiny is the third installation in a series of Star Wars TTRPG sets. As the title implies, it’s specifically focused on playing as Force users. It’s built around the age of the Empire, but players could just as easily form a band of Jedi in a different era as they could play fugitive Force users hiding from the Emperor’s wrath. When it comes to a campaign themed around Jedi, it’s impossible not to involve Coruscant. This planet-sized city is deeply connected to the history and legacy of the Jedi. It works in any era for a Jedi-themed campaign.
For thousands of years before the fall of the Republic, the Jedi all called Coruscant home. This is where the famous Jedi Temple resides; every Jedi Knight and Master grew up at this temple and learned the ways of the Force there. Depending on when a Star Wars campaign is set, odds are that a party member might remember their days training here and feel a strong motivation to walk its halls again. The Emperor is sure to keep the fallen temple under heavy security, so there’s no shortage of opportunity for combat with stormtroopers. Games like Star Wars: The Force Unleashed have proven the Temple’s potential as a battleground.
There’s more than enough reasons that the party would want to visit the Jedi Temple, too. This sacred site wasn’t just a school for young Jedi; it also served as a repository for Jedi secrets. Players might need to visit the temple in order to search the library and retrieve an important Jedi holocron before it falls into Imperial hands. Alternatively, there might be an important weapon that needs to be stolen from the Jedi Temple — an ancient and powerful lightsaber that the Emperor would use for his malevolent ends. The Empire could plot any number of things within the privacy of the Jedi Temple that a rogue band of Jedi heroes has to stop.
Coruscant isn’t just a great setting because of its relationship with the Jedi legacy. As the hub of a galaxy, Coruscant brings planets throughout the galaxy together. The population is extremely diverse, and players might leave and return to Coruscant regularly as they go on adventures on other planets. Coruscant also offers players a chance to get in touch with the underbelly of the Star Wars world, a time-honored tradition of Star Wars media. The city is teeming with criminals in its lower levels. Players might enact some vigilante justice on underworld kingpins, or they might band together with smugglers and bounty hunters to fight back against the Empire.
Coruscant works for a lot of time periods, too. Star Wars: Force and Destiny is designed to be played during the Empire’s reign, but savvy GMs could adapt the rules to a campaign set during the Clone Wars, for instance. During the days of the Republic, there was no planet more important than Coruscant, the seat of the Galactic Senate. Coruscant makes for a great setting for a political intrigue campaign where Jedi investigate corrupt senators and uncover Separatist conspiracies. Alternatively, players might band together with clone soldiers to fend off a Separatist assault on Coruscant.
Coruscant is a great campaign setting because of its versatility. It’s consistently important in the Star Wars universe, and it’s easy to bring players together on a planet like this. There’s all kinds of reasons that someone’s character might be interested in visiting Coruscant, and plenty of options when it comes to campaign plot hooks. For a Jedi focused campaign like what Star Wars: Force and Destiny provides, Coruscant is worth trying. Even if players don’t stay there, it’s the best jumping off point that anyone could ask for.
Star Wars: Force and Destiny is available now.
