When Agents Of SHIELD premiered, audience members and Marvel fans weren’t familiar with most of the titular agents. They knew Clark Gregg’s Phil Coulson. The character made the jump from the big screen to the small. Plenty of fans believed the series would be his show. Agents Of SHIELD, instead, was an ensemble series as the large cast of regulars all received episodes devoted to their development. It even worked as a superhero origin story for Daisy Johnson, a character not even every Marvel comic book fan is familiar with.
Though Chloe Bennet had a singing career in China as a teenager, and acting roles before Agents Of SHIELD, the Marvel series could undoubtedly be called her big break. Producers initially cast her as “Skye.” The character was a young woman looking to expose SHIELD and learn the truth about her family background. Bennet’s role in the show became larger, and the character more complex, as her story grew. Skye became Daisy Johnson. Inspired by the comic book character, she’s an Inhuman with “quaking” abilities. With Agents Of SHIELD officially over after seven seasons, it’s time Daisy AKA Quake gets her due in the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
It’s no secret that superhero stories on the screen tend to have a problem where women are concerned – including Marvel. There’s often a character imbalance in team-ups as one or two women contend with a team of men. Think Black Widow and Scarlet Witch with the rest of their male Avengers teammates. Black Widow’s solo movie still hasn’t been able to make it to theaters, but Scarlet Witch gets the spotlight in Disney+’s WandaVision. In fact, Disney+ is taking Marvel superheroes a step in the right direction with shows like She-Hulk, Ms. Marvel, and even Hawkeye.
All three series will give the spotlight to female comic book heroes. While Daisy Johnson doesn’t necessarily need her own series, seeing her get to appear in another one would be a satisfying continuation of her character for fans. As a member of the Agents Of SHIELD ensemble, she experienced growth, found her family, and made it into space. Fans want to know what happens next. At this point in her (admittedly, short) superheroic career, she could easily step in as a mentor or teammate to a fledgling hero – or as a foil for a villain. All of the upcoming female heroes, however, already have legacy characters built into their backstory. She-Hulk has her cousin Bruce Banner, Ms. Marvel is a Captain Marvel fan, and Kate Bishop has Clint Barton’s Hawkeye.
So, where would Daisy fit into the Disney Plus world?
The Disney Plus series centering on Loki is said to spin out of his Avengers: Endgame escape with an infinity stone. Loki’s series sees him using the stone to travel through time to different moments within the MCU – and get himself into a little trouble.
While a cameo from any of the Agents Of SHIELD, or really any Marvel character, likely isn’t out of the question for this show, Daisy could be an interesting addition in a recurring capacity. She’s already done the time travel and alternate reality schtick on the aforementioned Agents Of SHIELD. In fact, one of the most memorable episodes of the final season involves Daisy as the only team member aware that they’re caught in a time loop.
Daisy already knows how dangerous it can be to mess with an existing timeline. She could be a voice of reason opposite someone like Loki. She also has a connection to the Thor corner of the MCU. Jaimie Alexander guest starred as Lady Sif on Agents of SHIELD twice. Not to mention that both Chloe Bennet and Loki’s Tom Hiddleston are great at delivering sarcastic quips, so just seeing their characters argue would be entertaining for fans. It’s just a question of whether the characters cross paths in the same timeline.
When last Marvel fans saw Daisy, she stood in the cockpit of the Zephyr 3 as the craft approached a nebula in deep space. The Agents Of SHIELD time jump saw her character exploring the cosmos with a new team. A pretty big catastrophe would have to bring her back to Earth.
Disney+ has a series featuring Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on the way that fits the bill. Taking on and adapting the comic book story Secret Invasion, the series pairs Jackson with Ben Mendelsohn as the Skrull Talos. The storyline sees Skrulls secretly invade Earth. Beyond that, not much is known about what the Disney+ series will entail. In the comics, many heroes and villains found themselves captured by Skrull forces and impersonated for an incredible length of time before anyone found out.
With Daisy in space, she’s a prime candidate for discovering the invasion. At the very least, Daisy’s already crossed paths with half a dozen different species of aliens courtesy of the sixth season of Agents Of SHIELD. There’s no reason she couldn’t have met a Skrull in space, or even discovered Nick Fury wasn’t on Earth.
Timeline is, of course, a factor here. Agents Of SHIELD technically sent its characters into an alternate timeline when they changed events in MCU history. The Agents Of SHIELD series finale saw them close their own time loop as they went back to their original timeline. In theory, they avoided Thanos’ snap altogether as a result. They did, however, move one year forward in time, ending the series right in the middle of the five years that Avengers: Endgame jumped ahead.
That would actually work in favor of someone like Quake entering the fray on Disney+. She’s removed enough from the events of Endgame that she provides a fresh perspective to whatever the current fight is. Daisy might have the powers and will of a superhero, but she’s been operating like a secret government agent for most of the last seven years. She’s used to trying to contain situations instead of causing a spectacle – though she’s done some of that too.
Daisy also has a strong enough power that it’s not unreasonable to see her fit in with shapeshifting Skrulls or Asgardians. She’s strong enough to quake apart the Earth if she puts her mind to it. Marvel’s Kevin Feige has already said that he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of Marvel Netflix heroes popping up in Marvel movies now, so why not allow some small screen crossover as well?
Now that Daisy Johnson’s growing pains are over and she’s an established hero, she should get the chance to show it.
