Microsoft Flight Simulator Developer Interested in Bringing the Game to the Cloud

Take to the skies and explore the world from the comfort of home. It’s an enticing premise, and one that has kept the Microsoft Flight Simulator series going strong for years, leading to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 being the fastest growing entry in the series so far. As the game looks to the future, the Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator is interested in making the game accessible through the Cloud.

Microsoft Flight Simulator originally released on PC with Xbox Game Pass, and has recently added VR support for PC users. The 2020 entry in the series boasts highly-detailed 3D environments, tons of aircraft options, and continued support and improvements in the coming years.

In a sit down with AusGamers, Jorg Neuman, the Head of Microsoft Flight Simulator, talked about bringing the game to new platforms. While the team is mainly focused on getting Microsoft Flight Simulator onto the Xbox Series X and S, Neuman said he is interested in how Microsoft’s Project xCloud might be able to handle the game. Neuman says that he is looking forward to exploring the Cloud, as it “can reach people in different places and different situations,” and that he is fascinated by the potential.

Project xCloud is now folded into Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but it is Microsoft’s technology for cloud gaming. While Google Stadia’s ill-fated closures might have some gamers concerned, the future of cloud gaming is still very bright. Microsoft Flight Simulator isn’t a light game. If the game was to be made available through the Cloud, it may entice many more players to try it out who might not have high-end PCs or the new generation of Xbox.

Plus, it would just be incredibly cool to be able to explore the skies on a phone. Imagine: a player flying a virtual plane through their phone while sitting on a real-world flight. Cloud gaming could be a logical next step for Microsoft Flight Simulator. Until then, players can enjoy continual updates to the game, like the coming update that will improve regions like France, Belgium, and more.

Microsoft Flight Simulator is available now on PC, and planned for release on Xbox Series X/S in 2021.
