Alongside its full release, the indie platformer Blue Fire unveils a launch trailer showing off its difficult gameplay and gorgeous cel-shaded graphics.
Available today, Blue Fire is heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda‘s temples and puzzles and combines them with an art style and gameplay reminiscent of Hollow Knight. It’s yet another difficult addition to the platformer genre, but in terms of a good challenge, Blue Fire might take the cake. This 10-hour journey will make players’ palms sweaty from the action that focuses on parkouring and maneuvering rather than the puzzles and their solutions.
In Blue Fire, players assume the role of the tiny yet powerful fighter Umbra, a soulless being that brandishes a mask and uniform that once belonged to the warriors of Penumbra, but there are a number of unique skins that can be switched out as well. Blue Fire quickly establishes the premise: Umbra must rid the corruption from the kingdom, not unlike Breath of the Wild‘s setup.
While Blue Fire may not feature a gripping story, the polished platforming challenges are the highlight of the game. It’s brutal and punishing, sometimes sending players back to the start of a level if they die in a boss fight and other times forcing Umbra to go backtracking through areas to solve puzzles.
For a debut game only made by a small team of people over at ROBI Studios, Blue Fire has certainly impressed the gaming community so far. And currently, players can pick up Blue Fire on the Nintendo eShop and Steam at a discounted price for the next few days.
Blue Fire is out now for PC and Switch, with PS4 and Xbox One versions coming at a later date.
