Players can use a Workbench to craft a variety of items in Valheim, making it a very valuable object to have access to. Initially, the Workbench that a fan creates will be Level 1, and indeed its functionality will be somewhat limited. However, it is possible to upgrade a Workbench in Valheim several times, a process that will unlock a variety of new recipes and item improvements, and this guide will detail exactly how that is done.
To put things simply, Valheim players that wish to upgrade a Workbench will need to build specific objects in close proximity to it. The objects that will raise the level of a Workbench are the Chopping Block, the Tanning Rack, and the Adze, and they can all be made through a Hammer’s Crafting tab. That said, players will need to unlock the recipes for these Workbench Improvements before they can create them, and here is more information on that:
- Chopping Block: Unlocked after collecting a Flint.
- Tanning Rack: Unlocked after killing a Deer.
- Adze: Unlocked after crafting Bronze Nails (requires Bronze Ingots from a Forge) and collecting Fine Wood from Birch trees.
With respect to the placement of these objects, building them around the exterior of the structure that contains the Workbench should be perfectly suitable. Indeed, the crafting station will be upgraded as long as the Improvements are reasonably close, and it is thus not necessary to try to place them inside. Survival game fans can confirm that they have positioned an Improvement appropriately by accessing the Workbench and checking the number that appears in the star, as that indicates its level.
Once a player has placed the Chopping Block, Tanning Rack, and Adze around their structures, they should find that this number is four, and that does appear to be the maximum level for the Workbench at the time of writing. However, it is true that Valheim is currently in a Steam Early Access period, and it is thus possible that even more Workbench Improvements will be added before the official release.
For now, though, players can spend some time really getting familiar with exactly what can be crafted and upgraded through use of the Level 4 Workbench. Certainly, those that really master this fully-upgraded crafting station will have a big advantage as they explore the world of this Viking-themed game, which is marked by treacherous seas, creatures of chaos, and many more dangers.
Valheim is available in Steam Early Access now on PC.
