After releasing its 1.1 update, Factorio announces that though 1.1 will be the last update of the vanilla game, a large expansion pack is currently in the works.
Factorio fully released just last year after being in Early Access for 4 years. Recently, developer Wube Software released patch 1.1, which fixed around 150 known bugs as well as added several new highly requested features such as versatile controls for the spider bots and blueprint flipping. Since Factorio‘s full release, the game has sold over 2.5 million copies, resulting in over 38,000 hours of playtime on Steam, Wube reports.
Following the 1.1 update to Factorio, Wube released a statement saying that it would be the last version of the vanilla game to release aside from bug fixes and small tweaks that will come with maintenance over time. But Wube explains that it wants to continue expanding Factorio. While an indefinite number of free updates work for some games like Minecraft and Terraria, it isn’t the best model for Factorio, and the developers aren’t fans of small DLC packs.
That leaves Wube with one big option for the current version of Factorio: one big expansion pack. Though Wube hasn’t yet announced what the DLC pack will contain or when it’s coming, the developers hope it to be significant enough to “recapture peoples attention.”
Because Wube will be working to add new content to Factorio in the coming months, the studio is hiring for a few different positions including an operations developer, 3D artists, and a C++ programmer. Wube says this the best time to “invest into reinforcing our team.”
Factorio is out now for PC.
