One Animal Crossing: New Horizons player was inspired to crochet their own version of Mom’s Hand-Knit Sweater, a popular in-game item in the Animal Crossing community.
Like in previous Animal Crossing installments, Mom is a returning character in Animal Crossing: New Horizons that sends an item to the player each month of the year. In addition to non-native fruits, acorns, and mushrooms, Mom will send items from the Motherly series, one of the most popular furniture and clothing series in the game. When it comes to Mom’s Knapsack, Handmade Apron, and Hand-Knit Sweater, these items are not customizable like other Motherly items, making each of the eight different designs unique and rare items in Animal Crossing.
One Redditor, U/salamandrah, was inspired by Mom’s Hand-Knit Sweater, which comes in December for folks in the Northern Hemisphere and in the South for folks in the Southern Hemisphere, and created their own version of the red variation. The sweater looks largely similar to the clothing item in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, but salamandrah swapped out the plain red neck and waistline for yellow and blue, respectively.
Many players are impressed by salamandrah’s design, with some even asking if they would be willing to sell the sweater online. While it doesn’t look like salamandrah has plans to sell the sweater, they describe the process they used to create the New Horizons item.
For the flowery squares, salamandrah used a classic four-round granny square, they explain in a comment, alternating colors but ending with red on the fourth round to make it blend in with the sweater, and make it match with the in-game Mother’s Hand-Knit Sweater. Several other commenters requested a pattern, but salamandrah explains that they free-handed it, but describes in detail how they made the sweater so other Animal Crossing fans can create their own as well.
Many other players have taken a crack at creating other Motherly items from New Horizons as well. One small YouTuber by the name of Shroomie Crossing sewed all 6 variations of Mom’s Plushie, which is sent by Mom in the month of July for players in the Northern Hemisphere and in February for players in the Southern Hemisphere. Shroomie Crossing even gives a step-by-step tutorial, complete with a free pattern for anyone else who wants to make them.
There are 8 variations of Mom’s Hand-Knit Sweater in total, so perhaps u/salamandrah will be inspired to make another one of Mom’s designs in the future, including the highly popular Flowers and Star versions.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is out now for Nintendo Switch.
