Why The Day Before is Being Compared to The Last of Us

Developer FNTASTIC recently revealed its next project, The Day Before. This is a survival MMO game that will be played in the third-person perspective. A brief gameplay trailer has been shown, but no release dates have been announced yet.

From the moment the gameplay trailer was revealed, many started comparing it to The Last of Us and The Division. Many of The Day Before‘s ideas look to be formed from either of these games, which have sparked tons of conversations among fans.

From the onset, the similarities between The Last of Us and The Day Before seem to be apparent. A brief look at the poster of the game reveals striking similarities between both of the games as the picture of the protagonist seems to be in a similar pose to Ellie as seen in The Last of Us Part 2‘s poster. The gameplay reveal shows the player going into a grocery store of sorts and getting ambushed by enemies, which is similar to what was seen in The Last of Us 2‘s gameplay trailers.

From the trailer’s onset, players are greeted with heavy movement mechanics akin to Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us. Even the shooting mechanics and the stealth gameplay looks to be very much like what players experienced in The Last of Us games. Both games look to have guns with heavy recoil that bolster the inexperience of the protagonists with weapons, which is fitting considering both of them are survivors.

On the subject of the story material, both games tend to use similar settings and plots, and The Day Before seems to be banking on The Last of Us‘ success in this department to hit the same story beats and feelings of loss and separation. Both of these games feature a post-apocalyptic setting where a city has been destroyed by a deadly virus, and everyone around is looking for ways to survive, either by hook or crook. The Last of Us games feature well-realized believable characters with multi-faceted ambitions while The Day Before hasn’t shown anything substantial in this regard at the moment.

The similarities don’t here, though, as the last segment of the gameplay involves the player making his way to the top of the building via an elevator. The floor seems to be packed with zombies, and the player decides to sneak past them while their flashlight is turned on, which again, is very similar to the zombies players encounter in The Last of Us games. Since most of these similarities lie on the surface, they are easy to notice which is why the conversation regarding these similarities is raging continuously.

Despite these similarities, both of these games are considerably different in a lot of key aspects. The first and foremost being that The Last of Us games are single-player narrative-driven experiences while The Day Before is an MMO based around co-operating with randoms and friends alike. The gameplay trailer shows the player crafting a bandage to heal himself. Here, the overlying commentary states that using this item also ensures that the player doesn’t die due to the effect, which states that there are a lot more survival elements involved in the game.

While much isn’t known about The Day Before at the time of writing, it looks that the game is willing to incorporate even more elements of games like The Last of Us, which may not be a bad decision. What remains to be seen here is how the developers translate mechanics and systems built for a single player over to something that’s more focused on co-operation. From what’s known, the world seems to be incredibly detailed which is a good sign, considering the game is an open-world MMO.

The Day Before is currently in development for PC.
