$70 price hike hasn’t stopped NBA 2K21 selling 8 million copies

The game costs $10 more on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

NBA 2K21‘s new $70 price point hasn’t stopped millions of people from buying Take-Two’s basketball title.

Speaking to investors, the company’s CEO and chair Strauss Zelnick said that it had shipped 8 million copies of the game as of the end of December 2020. Take-Two previously said that it had sold in 5 million copies of NBA 2K21 for the previous quarter – following its September launch on PS4, Xbox One and Stadia – meaning that it shifted another 3 million in the last three months of 2020. NBA 2K21 was released in November for PS5 and Xbox Series X and S.

News that NBA 2K21 would cost $10 more on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S broke in July 2020, with Zelnick later defending the price hike as reflecting the increased cost of making games.

In the wake of Take-Two charging more for the next-gen versions of this title, other companies apparently were also considering an increased price.

“In terms of frontline pricing for NBA 2K21, I think that worked out very much as expected,” Zelnick told investors.

“And as planned, it’s in a premium offering at the highest possible level, the title was built from the ground up for next-gen, so first title here that has been created that way. And the acceptance by consumers has been nothing short of extraordinary, the title sold in over 8 million units. Now, we haven’t talked about pricing on other titles. So it would be premature to discuss that we’ll talk about that and title-by-title basis going forward.”
