After Tom Holland’s recent claim that Spider-Man 3 is “the most ambitious solo superhero movie” he’s ever filmed, plus the shocking reveal on WandaVision that marked the possible beginning of an MCU multiverse, there have been rumors that the untitled threequel will be its very own live-action spider-verse featuring a crossover of every existing Spider-Man franchise from both Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Adding fuel to the fire is the reported sighting of Spider-Man alum Willem Dafoe on the set of Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man 3, which comes after months of speculation on his return as Norman Osborn.
According to GWW, the Dafoe was spotted reporting to the set by the same sources who revealed Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus. At this moment, Dafoe’s official casting in the film has yet to be confirmed and it is still unclear whether or not he will actually don the Green Goblin suit once again, should he appear in Spider-Man 3. However, after Spider-Man: Far From Home hinted at MCU’s Spider-Man 3 being linked to the multiverse, there is a possibility that Dafoe’s Green Goblin—as well several other iconic characters from the Sam Raimi trilogy—will return in some form.
Producing a Spider-Man movie that brings elements from all the different Spider-Man franchises may have been the plan all along. Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have shared the live-action rights to Spider-Man for several projects now and such partnership will continue with Spider-Man 3. So far, only Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange and Jamie Foxx’s Electro have been confirmed to make appearances, but even those two castings alone point to more MCU and Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters actors being added to the mix.
Currently, the biggest rumor is that Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield will both reprise their past Spider-Man roles, effectively making the film a true spider-verse epic. Kirsten Dunst and Emma Stone have also been rumored to return as Mary Jane and Gwen Stacy, respectively, though there have been few reports on their possible involvement in the film.
As for the Willem Dafoe sighting, there are no set photos to confirm his actual return, despite initial reports. If Norman Osborn is to make a return in the story, it will be interesting to see how the film will make that happen, considering that he died at the end of Raimi’s Spider-Man.
That said, the MCU’s Spider-Man is already bringing back Electro, who also died in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, so there’s bound to be a way to make Norman’s return work. After all, the possibilities are endless with a spider-verse.
Spider-Man 3 is set for release on December 17, 2021.
