Jennifer Lawrence was thrust into the A-list league in large part due to her performances in blockbuster franchises such as The Hunger Games and X-Men. In the case of the latter, her portrayal as the shape-shifting mutant Mystique helped make her a recognizable figure in the action genre. However, after appearing in four X-Men films, she appears to be done with the role, at least for the time being.
According to We Got This Covered, Jennifer Lawrence isn’t against the idea of starring in more superhero movies, but she’d just prefer to play a different character other than Mystique. The news comes after rumors that she could reprise her role in the upcoming Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, which is now a possibility after the shocking reveal on episode 5 of WandaVision.
Sources close to We Got This Covered – the same ones who revealed that War Machine was getting his own Disney Plus series before Armor Wars was confirmed – say that Lawrence’s dismissive stance on a Mystique reprisal could have something to do with the commitment that the role requires. It’s no secret in Hollywood that sitting in a make-up chair every day for hours on end and getting painted from head to toe is not the most pleasant experience.
Lawrence is not alone in her sentiments, either. Other actors including Zoe Zaldana, who plays Gamora in The Guardians of the Galaxy, and even Jim Carrey, who starred in The Grinch, have spoken out about the challenge of playing characters that require full body paint and intricate special effects work. Lawrence has reportedly said that she wouldn’t mind making minor appearances as Mystique, but she would be very much opposed to playing her on a full-time basis.
Lawrence’s dwindling interest in the X-Men films in general also seemed to become more and more apparent as the series went on. Around the time that she was cast in X-Men: First Class, she had landed the first Academy Award nomination of her career for her work in Winter’s Bone. When Days of Future Past was released, she had already won an Academy Award and Golden Globe for best actress in Silver Lining’s Playbook, making her one of the most sought-after actresses in Hollywood.
By the time Dark Phoenix arrived, it seemed like she was over it entirely, with many fans saying her performance came across as fatigued and apathetic. While it would be great to see Jennifer Lawrence appear in the MCU, perhaps seeing her portray a different hero wouldn’t be the worst idea.
Jennifer Lawrence stars in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up, which is set to release on Netflix this year.
