A Powerpuff Girls Live-Action Series Is Coming To The CW

The Powerpuff Girls, a staple of ’90s nostalgia, will be returning to our television screens in the biggest way possible, thanks to The CW. The youth-geared network has ordered a pilot for a live-action Powerpuff Girls series for the 2021-2022 season, along with two other projects centered on young women.

The new Powerpuff Girls series was first announced as being in development back in August of last year. The story will revolve around Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup – the same iconic heroine trio featured in Craig McCracken’s original Cartoon Network Series. The modernized version will show the three girls all grown up, navigating their twentysomethings while also trying to come to terms with the childhoods they lost to crime-fighting.

Heather Regnier of Veronica Mars and iZombie and Diablo Cody of Juno and Jennifer’s Body are both set to write and executive-produce the series. Greg Berlanti (Love Simon), Sarah Schechter (Black Lightning), and David Madden (Runaway Bride) will also join the project as executive producers under Berlanti Productions. Erika Kennair and Warner Bros. Television are set to produce the show.

The Powerpuff Girls ran for six seasons on The Cartoon Network, spanning a total of 78 episodes between 1998 and 2005. The superhuman sisters were created when their father, Professor Utonium, combined “sugar, spice, and everything nice” with the mysterious Chemical X. The series received rave reviews over the course of its television run and was even made into a feature film in 2002, which was met with modest critical and commercial success.

The girls fought many notable villains in the show, including a maniacal monkey named Mojo Jojo, a flamboyant demon named HIM (that is, His Infernal Majesty), and a fuzzy pink hillbilly monster named Fuzzy Lumpkins. As of now, it is unknown whether or not these villains will make an appearance in the live-action reboot.

In addition to The Powerpuff Girls, The CW has also ordered a pilot for Naomi, a superhero drama by Ava DuVernay, a pilot for Cloister F*cked, which is a millennial nun drama by Jennie Snyder Urman, and a reboot of the classic sci-fi series The 4400.

The Powerpuff Girls is in development and will be coming soon to The CW.
