Acclaimed director Ava DuVernay (Selma, A Wrinkle in Time) will develop a pilot for The CW based on the DC comics character Naomi. DuVernay will serve as executive producer and writer alongside Arrow writer/producer Jill Blankenship. News that DuVernay and Blankenkship would be involved in the development of a Naomi series was announced late in 2020, but now there is the official confirmation that a pilot has been ordered by the CW.
According to Deadline: “The show follows a teen girl’s journey from her small northwestern town to the heights of the multiverse. When a supernatural event shakes her hometown to the core, Naomi sets out to uncover its origins, and what she discovers will challenge everything we believe about our heroes.” A more recent addition to DC comics, the character Naomi made her debut in 2019 with Naomi: Season One, which was co-written by Brian Michael Bendis and David F. Walker, and illustrated by Jamal Campbell.
In the comics Naomi McDuffie is a teenager from an alternate universe where the Earth’s ozone layer has collapsed due to years of man-made pollution, exposing the planet’s population to radiation. This causes a small group of people to gain superpowers and one of them happens to be Naomi’s mother. Despite the belief that these super-powered beings can no longer procreate, Naomi’s mother gives birth to her and sends her away to another dimension in an attempt to protect her from one of the other super-powered beings, who wish to destroy her and reign supreme.
Naomi’s energy-based superpowers give her a variety of abilities, including super-strength, durability, transformation, and flight. Naomi has gone on to become a popular character amongst readers, having run-ins with flagship DC characters like Superman and Batman. She eventually went on to join Young Justice, a superhero team made up of younger DC sidekicks and heroes such as Robin and Superboy.
DuVernay made a name for herself with the critically acclaimed, Oscar-winning 2014 film Selma, which depicted Civil Rights icon Martin Luther King Jr.’s fight for voting rights in the 1960s Jim Crow south. DuVernay has also worked as a director and producer on several television projects in recent years, including Queen of the South and the acclaimed Netflix Miniseries When They See Us. DuVernay seems to be settling her way into the world of DC superhero movies/TV, as she is also confirmed to be directing a New Gods movie, based on the DC comic of the same name from the legendary Jack Kirby.
The director shared her excitement for the upcoming pilot on Twitter, posting an image of the teenage superhero with the caption: “NAOMI was created by Brian Michael Bendis, David Walker and artist Jamal Campbell in 2019. Her last name McDuffie is a tribute to late comic writer Dwayne McDuffie. Now, she’s on her way to a pilot for @TheCW from yours truly and Jill Blankenship. Her journey continues. Let’s go!”
