God of War’s Ragnarok-set sequel, at least as far as fans can tell from its sole trailer, is poised to be a huge release in 2021 for PlayStation 5. The 2018 entry in the series proved to be a critical and commercial hit while reinvigorating the franchise for a new generation, with Kratos moving on to ancient Norway to deal with a whole new pantheon of gods. A notable change from the original series is the boss fights, with the 2018 games bosses being smaller scale for the most part when compared to the original Greek adventure.
The 2018 God of War game saw Kratos and his son Atreus take on numerous monsters and gods. Except for a few examples, such as the fight with the dragon Hraezlyr, the bosses the player fights tended to be physically smaller than those found in the original titles, as well as having smaller battlefields. Overall, boss fights were enjoyable in the title. but they were not without their criticism from some members of the franchise’s fandom. The God of War Ragnarok sequel’s boss fights are on top of fan wish lists to improve, and thanks to the events of the recent game and its narrative twists, there is every chance gamers could be in for some epic boss battles.
In God of War, Kratos and Atreus killed Magni and Modi, the sons of Thor, and the god of thunder’s half-brother Baldur. As it was suggested in the true ending for the game, Thor is going to be out for revenge and it’s unlikely that he will be the only resident of Asgard who is looking to seek out and destroy Kratos and his son. Thor has been described as a ruthless savage and the worst of the Aesir gods within the first Norse-set game, and going by that description, players could be in for a vicious, large-scale battle with the son of Odin.
In Norse mythology, Thor is known to wield the ability to control lightning and storms, in addition to his brute strength. Thor could have the power to present a larger than life fight for Kratos, with the ability to produce heavy storms and summon the elements to shape the very battlefield they’re on. While the god of thunder is not a monstrous creature, the fight he has the potential to bring is huge, and he won’t be the only god in the Ragnarok sequel to seek revenge on the Spartan.
Thor won’t be the only god hunting Kratos in the God of War sequel. The Ghost of Sparta killed Baldur in front of his own mother, Freya, to save her life. Freya did not appreciate this at the time and promised vengeance as she brought the lifeless body of her son with her. Similar to Thor, Freya may appear as though she is an average-sized humanoid but the power she wields is anything but that, as she has been shown capable of reanimating the dead and possesses control over nature.
In God of War, she was able to resurrect the fallen frost giant Thamur, in a bid to stop Kratos and Atreus from battling her son Baldur. She has immense power and is more than capable of changing the very landscape of any arena she is locked in, and undoubtedly will prove to be an immense challenge for the former God of War.
The new game is set to feature Ragnarok, at least seemingly, the end of days that will see the destruction of the gods and the world submerged in water, and as part of these events, several battles could take place. Unlike Zeus in the original games, it’s unlikely that the endgame boss of the Ragnarok-set title will be Odin. He could easily feature throughout the events of the game and even be fought, which could be a massive fight. The Allfather possesses enormous strength, the ability to shapeshift and regenerate, and could pose a serious threat to Kratos and his son in battle, but his destiny could lie elsewhere.
In Norse mythology, Odin is actually killed by the huge wolf Fenrir during the events of Ragnarok. In the God of War universe, this may not come to pass, as Ragnarok foretells that Magni and Modi would survive and they have already been killed. In other words, it’s really hard to say.
Ragnarok sets the scene for several encounters with large monsters, which could see the new game harken back to the originals, much to the joy of some fans of the franchise. Fenrir, the giant wolf, is a major part of the events of the Norse apocalypse where he not only kills Odin but is killed himself at the culmination of the end of days. Should Kratos encounter the monster during the events of the title, players can be sure they will have a large-scale fight on their hands with the creature whose size could be comparable to that of the titans in the Greece-set games. If it were done well enough, it has the potential to be one of the biggest and best boss fights in God of War history.
While some details of God of War’s events of Ragnarok have been altered, there is one battle that could be a visual treat as much s it could be a stellar boss fight if Kratos is involved. Thor and Jormungandr go toe to toe in the mythological events of Ragnarok, and the thought of the massive World Serpent facing down the god of thunder is a fun prospect for a lot of fans. What could be even more interesting is the thought of Kratos being involved to defend the World Serpent, considering his journey with Atreus couldn’t have been possible without the giant. A fight of this size could be exciting, and hopefully, the scale of it is possible using the power of the PlayStation 5.
God of War’s Ragnarok sequel is hotly-anticipated, but there is no concrete information on the title at the moment. Fans might be in for a wait to get some more information on the game, let alone the boss fights it will contain. There are many opportunities for epic boss fights in the game, though, with some being inspired by the original games. For a lot of fans, battles reminiscent of the older titles are at the top of many wish lists.
God of War’s Ragnarok sequel is set to release in 2021 on PlayStation 5.
