Anime and WWE are probably the last two fandoms we’d expect to associate with one another. However, the two worlds collided this week when former WWE Champion John Cena took to Instagram to post a photo from the popular anime series My Hero Academia; a move that sent the internet into a total frenzy.
Cena’s post followed a Twitterstorm that erupted over the similarities between Deku’s pose in a poster for the franchise’s third film and Cena’s “You Can’t See Me” pose. After the online discussion went viral, Cena uploaded a cropped screenshot of the poster to his Instagram page without a caption, making it all the more cryptic and buzz-worthy.
While some fans are chalking it up to coincidence, others are more convinced that the Deku is throwing up the iconic pose as a genuine nod to the Peacemaker star. After all, My Hero Academia has a history of shouting out elements of pop culture it takes inspiration from, from Final Fantasy to Star Wars. The purported Easter egg involving Cena has led some people to believe that he could be lending his voice to the upcoming film, whereas others think he may just be a fan of the show.
So far, there have been two My Hero Academia movies. The first movie, named Two Heroes, centers on the bond between All Might and Deku, while the second movie, Heroes Rising, focuses on the rivalry between Izuku and Bakugo. The story follows Izuku and his friends from Class 1-A as they find themselves protecting an island from the powerful villain Nine. In a tense battle, Deku almost dies and even has to transfer the power of One For All to Bakugo to give them a fighting chance; but in the end, the group was able to defeat Nine, bringing them closer to their goal of becoming professional crime fighters.
Currently, no plot details have been revealed for the third movie; however, reports have revealed that at least three of the main heroes will receive buffs in order to face an unidentified threat. With those upgrades in the works and an already-extensive roster of heroes that exists in the anime, it’s unlikely that the heroes will need an entirely new character voiced by Cena, who himself is hard at work on HBO Max’s Peacemaker series, to assist them with their crime-fighting initiatives.
The third My Hero Academia film is set to release in Japan this summer.
