Arnold Schwarzenegger is one of the biggest action movie stars of all time. That’s not a bad result for a man who originally didn’t plan to become an actor. Schwarzenegger worked as a body-builder at first, and he achieved great success in this area as well. He gradually moved toward film, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The role that made Arnold Schwarzenegger famous is none other than Terminator in the Terminator franchise. However, Schwarzenegger has done a lot of different movies throughout his career, some of which the critics accepted better and some worse. The 1990s are a good example of how varied Schwarzenegger’s filmography is.
10 Batman And Robin (1997): 28
The cheesy and silly Batman and Robin has a reputation of being the film that killed Batman movies for almost ten years. That is, until Christopher Nolan revived the caped crusader in 2005. The film is full of moments that don’t make sense. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Mr. Freeze who works with another villain, Poison Ivy, and no one cares that their evil goals are incompatible. The film gives Schwarzenegger very little material to work with, besides constant icy puns that are far from cool.
9 End Of Days (1999): 33
Arnold Schwarzenegger has done a lot of action movies. Some became classics while others didn’t stand the test of time. End of Days belongs to the second category. This action-horror film tells the story of what happens when Satan comes back to Earth. A new millennium is coming and Satan searches for a woman who would have his child. Schwarzenegger plays a former policeman, Jericho Cane, who’s trying to protect the woman. The plot sounds bizarre right from the start (and not in a good way). The critics didn’t like the film’s dialogues, special effects, or even the acting performances.
8 Jingle All The Way (1996): 34
Jingle All The Way is the ultimate proof that even films with low critics rating can become classics. The film is now on many families’ lists as one of their go-to Christmas classics. The family comedy focuses on a dad, Howard (Schwarzenegger), who wants to get his son a Turbo Man action figure. The problem is that plenty of other parents got the same idea. If Howard wants to succeed, he will have to go on an unexpected adventure. The film doesn’t pretend to be a big art piece, but those looking to relax could enjoy it nonetheless.
7 Last Action Hero (1993): 44
Last Action Hero might not have scored high with the critics, but it does work with an interesting idea. A young boy, Danny, greatly admires film action hero, cop Jack Slater (Schwarzenegger). When Danny enters Slade’s world and Slade’s enemy, Benedict (Charles Dance), gets out, it’s up to Jack and Danny to stop him.
The film offers plenty of opportunities to laugh as well as action scenes. And thanks to combining two different worlds, it’s also different from a majority of action movies of that time.
6 Eraser (1996): 56
Eraser is an action movie that keeps a fast pace for all of its two hours. Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as the titular ‘Eraser’. He works as a federal marshall for the Federal Witness Protection Program. He’s really good at his job, as well as passionate about it, making him a sympathetic character. What brings it down a little is that it seems Schwarzenegger’s hero mostly faces criminals who are nowhere on his level. Other than that, Eraser is an acceptable, albeit forgettable action movie.
5 Total Recall (1990): 57
Based on a story by the successful writer Philip K. Dick, Total Recall from 1990 fared better with the critics than another version from 2012. As is typical for Philip K. Dick’s work, the film doesn’t give clear answers to the audience. Instead, it provides them with plenty of opportunities to consider what’s going on. That makes it very different from a large number of sci-fi films. Total Recall plays both with its hero’s mind as well as with the audience, and it has plenty of memorable moments.
4 Junior (1994): 59
This film works with a premise that many people, especially women, would no doubt find tempting. Thanks to a fertility research project, for the first time ever, a man becomes pregnant. The film stars Schwarzenegger alongside Danny DeVito.
Junior‘s director Ivan Reitman combines action and humor to create an enjoyable film. Those viewers who accept its bizarre premise will be able to enjoy a plethora of funny gags and good performances from all the main actors.
3 Kindergarten Cop (1990): 61
Some of Arnold Schwarzenegger’s most interesting movies are the ones that place this action hero in an unexpected situation. This time, Schwarzenegger plays an undercover cop who has to pose as a kindergarten teacher to catch a criminal. He soon learns that taking care of a bunch of kids can be harder than facing deadly opponents. Some critics called Kindergarten Cop a feel-good movie, and the description is accurate. This film will be enjoyable both for adult viewers and their children.
2 True Lies (1994): 63
True Lies prove that it’s never a good idea to lie to one’s wife, even if they work as a super-secret special agent. Schwarzenegger’s Harry Task is so focused on his job that he neglects his marriage. When his wife Helen (Jamie Lee Curtis) starts to flirt with a neighbor who pretends he’s a secret agent, Harry is in a pickle. In the end, the couple has to save the day together and also save their marriage. After Terminator, director James Cameron once again joined forces with Schwarzenegger. And just like before, their cooperation led to an impressive result.
1 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991): 75
Unsurprisingly, Schwarzenegger’s best-rated film from the 1990s is the Terminator sequel. Once again, Schwarzenegger’s Terminator comes back. But this time, he’s the one who protects Sarah Connor and her son, John, who’s a child. Schwarzenegger’s emotional development in the film is only one of the reasons why it’s a classic. It also transformed Linda Hamilton’s Sarah Connor into a fighter, capable of taking care of herself. Not many sequels can be better than their predecessors but Terminator 2 managed it.
