Rumor: Xbox Backward Compatibility News Coming Soon | Game Rant

Being able to play older titles on newer systems is an important part of being a modern gamer. Earlier last month, it was announced that gamers would eventually learn more about backward compatibility for the Xbox Series X at some point this year. It seemed that plans were afoot to enhance older games for the new system. Now it appears that some more news has been unveiled by none other than Director of Product Management, Jason Ronald.

Ronald recently spoke to Larry Hyrb (aka Major Nelson) about what the team have been doing since coming back from a break at the end of 2020. He says they’ve been listening to feedback from the Xbox community. One of the items discussed was the possibility of bringing quick resume back to the console for all available titles, something which only supported select games.

But one of the things that’s hopefully on the horizon is updates on backward compatibility, which Ronald said there will be news about coming soon. Major Nelson, who recently celebrated twenty years at Microsoft, asked about whether some of these latest developments will look back at the Xbox One generation with Ronald confirming that they’ve been listening to feedback from both current gen and previous gen users. He then said that the company is committed to keeping fans happy no matter which Xbox system they choose to play.

There were some other topics discussed on the podcast, such as Smart Delivery, which enables players to purchase an Xbox One game and automatically get the Xbox Series X|S versions once they upgrade to the newer console. Ronald confirmed that more than six million users have utilized Smart Delivery since launch. The full interview is shown above, with Ronald’s segment beginning around the 34-minute mark.

It’s good that Microsoft are listening to feedback. It has allowed the company to keep pushing sought after ideas so they can give gamers exactly what they want. With Ronald now saying that more news is coming in the very near future, fans will be listening out and checking all updates to see what these latest developments will involve. Some may be holding out for enhancements for old games or improvements to frame rate caps. Despite both Xbox Series X and PS5 struggling to out-perform their previous incarnations in terms of sales, the current generation is still proving to be popular with gamers and the team at Xbox are showing that there is still life in both console generations.
