The original Oddworld game was something of a gem in classic gaming, being a somewhat darkly comic puzzle platformer with visuals way ahead of its time. Now with Oddworld: Soulstorm being announced last year, old school fans are no doubt looking forward to the return of Abe’s next adventure, especially with the new trailer doing the rounds.
The trailer shows that a spring 2021 release is on the cards. The game itself is more than just a new installment of the Oddworld series, as, according to creator Lorne Lanning, Oddworld: Soulstorm is the true sequel to the 1997 classic PlayStation game.
Similarly to previous games, players will take control of Abe in a 2.5D environment where they will be required to rescue their friends who have been forced into slave labor, all while trying to outrun the evil forces of their mudokon overlords. The trailer captures the essence of the original game. The original Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysey was remastered in 2014 and was given away for free on Epic Games Store last Christmas.
Recently, the PS5 graphics for Oddworld: Soulstorm were being shown off, depicting graphical improvements overall. All in all, it’s looking like it’s going to be a hit with some of the older fans. It’s a little sad that there isn’t a precise release date for it yet, but launch day is looming and the trailer suggests it could be a firm favorite with a lot of platforming gamers. It seems to balance the line between new-gen visuals, and somewhat more old school gameplay mechanics.
