The upcoming 7th and 8th Mission: Impossible films will no longer be shooting back to back as previously planned. According to Deadline, Paramount’s decision merely comes down to the shifting release calendar and the promotional requirements for leading actor Tom Cruise’s other summer blockbuster, Top Gun: Maverick.
Cruise will now be unavailable to continue shooting Mission: Impossible 8 as he will be busy with promotional duties for the studio’s high-profile Top Gun sequel ahead of that film’s planned summer release on July 2nd. After Top Gun: Maverick is released, Cruise can resume production on the eighth film in the Mission: Impossible series.
The currently untitled next Mission: Impossible film marks the seventh time Cruise has appeared as death-defying IMF agent Ethan Hunt. It will be the third film in the series directed by Christopher McQuarrie, the previous two being Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015) and Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2019). The seventh installment of the franchise has been one of many big-name Hollywood productions to face setbacks due to the pandemic.
The 7th film in the series has managed to continue shooting through the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic in various locations around the world and is currently nearing completion. According to Deadline, rumors that the shooting schedule had been disrupted by pandemic-related travel issues are false. McQuarrie even recently posted an image and caption on Instagram, saying that the production had now finished shooting in its Middle East location, and that cast and crew were traveling back to London to apply a few “finishing touches” to the film.
The film’s challenging production recently made headlines when an audio recording or Cruise went viral. In the recording, Cruise can be heard chastising and threatening to fire members of the crew who were allegedly not following COVID-19 filming protocols.
Some on social media praised the actor’s handling of the situation, suggesting that Cruise was in his right to chew out the irresponsible crew members, but some saw it as an abuse of power and an inappropriate way to talk to subordinates. Regardless of shooting difficulties, Mission: Impossible 7 is looking to be on track for its current scheduled release date of November 19, 2021.
Mission: Impossible 8 is slated to come out on November 4th, 2022.
