Disney Teases A Devilish Emma Stone As ‘Cruella’, Trailer Out Tomorrow

Disney continues to travel through the treacherous path that lies ahead of releasing movies in 2021 and it’s done so by doubling down on the release of Cruella, the live-action origin story to One Hundred and One Dalmatians’ villain Cruella de Vil, starring Emma Stone.

Previously, it had been speculated that Disney could opt to forgo a theatrical release in the United States for several of its reimaginings of their classic franchises, such as Pinocchio and Peter Pan and Wendy, a move that would have in all likelihood also included Cruella. However, Cruella is not only set to hit its targeted theatrical release date, but it’s finally getting a trailer tomorrow.

The news was shared via Disney’s official Twitter account, which sent out a tweet showing the poster for Cruella captioned “Hello, Cruel World”, with Emma Stone looking incredibly villainous. The artwork also confidently shows a May 2021 release date, suggesting Disney is quite keen on getting the film out by its previously announced premiere date, though it’s still unclear how big of a theatrical release that would mean three months from now.

As for the actual poster, it features Cruella de Vil’s signature white, black, and red color scheme, but also has Stone’s name stylized with an anarchist symbol in place of the A, so that will probably be a theme to look out for in Cruella’s 1970s London setting, as the young fashion designer spirals towards dalmatian-obsessed madness. Cruella is directed by Craig Gillespie and also stars Emma Thompson, Joel Fry, and Emily Beecham, but most notably has Glenn Close, who played Cruella in the ’90s movie, on board as executive producer.

Disney’s next big film is Raya and the Last Dragon, which will be out in theaters and on Disney Plus “Premier Access” starting March 5, and the animated feature could help define the company’s film release strategy for the rest of 2021 for the likes of Black Widow. With Cruella edging closer towards the beginning of the summer, Disney will be hoping vaccine rollouts will make its theatrical release more profitable by then when the film would compete with Fast and Furious 9 at the box office.

For now, the Cruella trailer would seem promising as the lavish villain is perfect to make the best out of Stone’s talent, especially with an origin story that places the fashion icon right after the cultural revolution of the UK’s swinging sixties, which surely influenced her creative endeavors.

Cruella is planned for release on May 28, 2021.
