After months of waiting, Marvel’s Avengers fans finally got a closer look at the game’s next playable add-on character yesterday. Kate Bishop did a good job of creating some excitement in early 2021, but since then players have been anxiously awaiting the first real look at Clint Barton and this version of Hawkeye’s gameplay reveal. This week’s deep dive war table finally offered up some details about the coming hero and its release date.
The stream and some related press released offered up a lot of information on Clint, and touched on the new generation versions of the game, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that all the fans were satisfied and happy with the showing. Marvel’s Avengers had a launch that was plagued by bugs in the campaign and the online multiplayer, but many of those original issues have since been resolved. That said, fans still think the game has a long way to go in terms of the pacing of its new content rollouts if it wants to survive another year.
The livestream did deliver a nice closer look at Hawkeye and the playable character’s toolkit, but some fans were quick to express their surprise and disappointment in the March 18 release date for the hero (and the new generation versions of the game). That means that there is still more than a month left before the new hero arrives and brings some fresh missions to the game. For players who have been grinding away since launch and already have every hero maxed out, the idea of spending another month playing through the same missions and weekly Mega Hive may sound pretty unappealing.
Amidst some of the drama that came along with the release date reveal, there was also a first look some of Hawkeye’s early alternate skins for the game. Luckily, there is a little more to be excitement about here, as a number of the skins definitely address another one of the frequent complaints from the community about the game: A lack of “comics accurate” costume options…
Although the costumes may not match up with the ones found in Marvel comic books 100%, a handful of these are definitely heavily inspired by Clint’s look in the books over the year. From his traditional costume all the way up through the New Avengers-inspired Ronin black and gold outfit, these costumes definitely deliver the type of alternate skin that some players have complained about other heroes lacking. Although some aspects of the stream, like the release date and the lack of a teaser for future content, may not have gone over so well, it’s good to note that there are some areas where the game is heading in the right direction. It will be interesting to see if it remains profitable enough to stick around and speed up content releases enough to win back some of the playerbase who have walked away from the game.
More details about the Hawkeye content should continue to arrive in the coming weeks as the March 18 release date approaches for his operation and the new generation versions of the game. Until then, be sure to check back frequently for more Marvel’s Avengers news, guides, and updates.
Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One, with PS5 and Xbox Series X versions coming March 18.
