HBO Max is becoming the home of multiple DC Comics-based superhero shows in the coming years. Now, the Green Lantern series is evidently scheduled to start filming on April 12, 2021, and will introduce multiple members of the eponymous intergalactic law enforcement agency.
According to Productionlist.com, the synopsis for the show reads: “The Green Lantern Corps is an outer-space law-enforcement agency aided by each members’ individual power ring that grants the wearer abilities based on the strength of their own willpower. Follows the adventures of a multitude of Lanterns, including Guy Gardner, Jessica Cruz, Simon Baz, and Alan Scott – Earth’s first Green Lantern, who, true to the comics, is a gay man – and many more.” Strangely, the listing also refers to this production as a “feature film,” but this is almost definitely the HBO Max Green Lantern series, as it matches previous descriptions of the show.
In the comics, the Green Lantern Corps is an intergalactic law enforcement organization that patrols the farthest reaches of the galaxy at the behest of the Guardians, a race of immortals from the planet Oa. Each member of The Green Lantern Corps uses a green power ring that grants them superhuman abilities. The title of Green lantern has been taken up by many different characters throughout DC comics history, including several from the earth. Further plot details for the show are scarce at this time, but it’s also been confirmed that the villain Sinestro will appear in the show. In the comics, Sinestro is a former member of the Green Lantern Corps who was dishonorably discharged for abusing his power.
Last October, it was announced that a Green Lantern series was ordered by HBO Max with Seth Grahame-Smith and Marc Guggenheim serving as co-writers and executive producers. Guggenheim has written several DC-related projects, such as the hit CW series Arrow as well as Legends of Tomorrow. He previously co-wrote the original 2011 Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds. The 2011 film marked the first time the character had made his live-action debut. However, the film was not well received by audiences and critics alike, and for a while, it seemed unlikely that fans would see more of the ring-wielding superhero anytime soon. In that film, Ryan Reynolds plays Hal Jordan, a test pilot who is chosen by the ring after its previous owner dies. Even though it appears several iterations of the character will be depicted in the HBO Max show, Hal Jordan is surprisingly not mentioned in the synopsis. Jordon is probably one of the most well-known Green Lanterns and is often the first name to be associated with the character.
It’s possible that the series will serve as more of a spin-off to the larger DCEU films and TV shows, like Justice League and the upcoming James Gunn Suicide Squad sequel. Perhaps there is still a Green Lantern feature film in the works, he is after all usually depicted as an important member of the Justice League. It’s also likely that some version of the character will be depicted in Zack Snyder’s new version of Justice League, but we’ll have to wait and see when it premieres on HBO Max, March 18th. At the moment there is no confirmation of a Green Lantern Feature film.
The Green Lantern series is just one of several DC comics projects to be released on HBO Max in the future. It’s also been announced that there will be a Suicide Squad spin-off series about the character Peacemaker, played by John Cena and developed by director James Gunn. Also in the works is a series about the Gotham Police Department, which is intended to tie-in with the upcoming Matt Reeves film The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson as the billionaire turned vigilante. It was recently announced that Joe Barton would replace Terrance Winter as executive producer and showrunner for that series.
Green Lantern will premiere on HBO Max on a yet-to-be-announced date.
