Octopath Traveler Team Reveals Project Triangle Strategy

The team behind Octopath Traveler is ready to share what it has been working on next. Square Enix showed up during the February 2021 Nintendo Direct to reveal an all-new game, but even Octopath Traveler fans could have predicted what that new game would be. Project Triangle Strategy takes the retro pixel-art visuals of Octopath Traveler and puts them into a tactical RPG game rather than a more traditional JRPG.

In Project Triangle Strategy, players will take on the role of Serenoa, the heir to the kingdom of Glenbrook. As Serenoa, players will navigate a complex story in which the fate of nations hang in the balance. Tough decisions that will task the player with choosing between Utility, Morality, and Liberty, which leads them down consequential paths they may never have expected. Details on the scope of the story aren’t clear, but the trailer gives much more of a Final Fantasy Tactics impression than it does a Final Fantasy Tactics Advance one.

Project Triangle Strategy also uses turn-based combat, but unlike Octopath Traveler it’s also built around grid-based tactical combat. Little detail about the combat have been shared, but the trailer does reveal some exciting detail. For example, it looks like battles can feature a significant number of allies and enemies on each battle map.

Project Triangle Strategy is the game’s working title, just as Project Octopath Traveler was the previous game’s working title. Odds are Square Enix will drop the “Project” portion of the name closer to launch, though there’s always a possibility that the name will dramatically change. For the time being, Square Enix wants to collect feedback, so a free Project Triangle Strategy demo is available now on the Switch.

Project Triangle Strategy releases in 2022 on the Nintendo Switch.
