Nintendo held a 50-minute Nintendo Direct presentation today to reveal information regarding games that are mostly coming to the Switch in the first half of 2021. The presentation had some heavy hitters such as the reveal of a new Mario Golf title and a brand-new fighter from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 coming to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. One title that many fans did not expect to see though, was a remaster of a 3DS game called Miitopia.
Miitopia is a turn-based RPG with some social elements mixed in there. It allows players to create their own characters based on Mii’s that can be customized and glammed up for an adventure. One feature that’s new to the Switch version of Miitopia is makeup and wigs, truly branching out on the personalization department. Mii’s typically don’t allow for much customization, so hopefully, these improvements will give players more than enough options to be whoever they want to be.
Players can gain an advantage in battle by hanging out with other party members and getting to know them. And on the other hand, if two party members aren’t compatible, it can lead to trouble during battles, such as one character attacking an ally during combat. And there’s also a horse that can join the party, just in case fans were wondering.
Miitopia originally released for the Nintendo 3DS back in the summer of 2017 and received many mixed reviews from several gaming outlets, including Game Rant’s score of 3 stars out of 5, with the reviewer stating that Miitopia is “certainly unique in its execution, but the core RPG framework for the title is far from innovative. In that regard, it’s one of the more accessible turn-based role-playing games currently available on the Nintendo 3DS, and this is made even better by the often-bizarre blank canvas that users have at their disposal.”
It seems that Nintendo isn’t changing much of Miitopia before it launches this spring, so it’ll be interesting to see whether critics find the game to still be lacking in content and if the title will receive a higher overall score on aggregate sites like Metacritic.
As far as other big titles launching on the Switch this spring, Mario Golf: Super Rush is heading to the hybrid console on June 25 and The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword is getting an HD remaster that will launch on July 16 alongside a new set of Zelda-themed Joy-Con.
Miitopia is set to launch for the Nintendo Switch on May 21, 2021.
