Marvel’s WandaVision has been reliably keeping audiences on their toes with new twists and turns every episode, and last week’s cliffhanger left many viewers concerned about the fate of several characters, including Kat Dennings’ Dr. Darcy Lewis. Luckily, it looks like her fellow star, Teyonah Parris, has good reason for fans to rest easy.
Parris, who plays the more-important-than-she-seems Monica Rambeau on WandaVision, recently spoke about the developments in that particular episode, specifically why she thinks these characters were more prepared for the various shenanigans than many realized. The episode ended with Wanda expanding her zone of influence (referred to in the show as the “Hex”) and surrounding a number of S.W.O.R.D. agents, including Dr. Lewis. So, fans were left understandably worried about what this means for the character, but this worry comes from more than just Marvel’s arguably questionable writing of female characters over the years.
Parris discussed the main trio on the S.W.O.R.D. side of the show, consisting of Rambeau, Lewis, and Randall Park’s FBI Agent Jimmy Woo. At this point in the series, they’d formed a bit of a tight-knit group as they try to figure things out on their own after being thrown out of the main S.W.O.R.D. operation (which was already a challenge to bring into the show). As a result, they’ve learned to expect the unexpected and think outside the box in a way that the division’s director Tyler Hayward, who ejected them, doesn’t seem to be willing to. “That trio,” Parris said during an interview with CinemaBlend, “the Jimmy, Monica, Darcy trio, I think they’ll find a way to figure some things out. I don’t think they’ll make it so easy.”
WandaVision audiences have seen that anyone who gets drawn into the Hex is essentially rewritten into a different person, at least in terms of personality. So while it’s anyone’s guess what kind of persona Dr. Lewis will inhabit the next time she shows up, viewers can at least take comfort knowing that she isn’t going anywhere. Other agents were seen transforming into circus performers as the Hex expanded around them, so perhaps the sarcastic scientist is in for some humorous scenes going forward. Besides, Dr. Lewis is clearly more important to WandaVision than some may realize.
The mechanics of the Hex aside, it was always unlikely that Dennings’ character would go out so easily. She’d only just returned to the Marvel universe after being absent for several years, to the point where she even had to watch her old performances to get back in character. So, for Marvel to put in all that work to bring her back only to unceremoniously boot her from the show? That would probably be the most unsatisfying twist they could come up with.
So, rest easy for now. Marvel is fully aware of how popular Dr. Lewis is. Based on that, they most likely aren’t looking to kill her off. At least not until she plays a lead role for a solid decade of movies. (R.I.P. Iron Man.)
