Diablo 2 launched back in 2000 after the success of its predecessor Diablo. Now, in 2021, Blizzard Entertainment has announced Diablo 2: Resurrected, which will be bringing back a remastered version of the classic title. Not only can fans revisit known locations from the core game, but Diablo 2‘s remake is including features from its notorious expansion “Lords of Destruction.”
Blizzard Entertainment’s Diablo 2: Resurrected has been a long-requested title from the development company. Although drastically different than modern Diablo titles, the game inspired a multitude of isometric games and set a lasting tone and foundation for the diabolical series. Diablo fans will be able to revisit the classic experience and not worry about purchasing the DLC pack Lords of Destruction again.
In the original Diablo 2 release, Lords of Destruction was a published expansion pack that added in two new classes along with tons of extra content. It gave a new end-game experience to the original Diablo 2 story and introduced Diablo’s brother Baal in an epic 5th act. Players who purchased the expansion also received an expanded stash for item storage, new hirelings, and updates to the Horadric Cube and other crafting systems. Although Diablo 2 was functional without the expansion, the Lords of Darkness pack added in extra features that only improved the game experience and added an extra layer of depth that many fans were looking for.
The Assassin and Druid classes added an extra variant for Diablo 2 fans to interact with. The Assassin was a mix of martial arts and trap laying with three distinct trees. Shadow, Traps, and Martial Arts each added a plethora of options for lighting fast takedowns and strategic mob eliminations.
The Druid, however, specialized in nature-magic and shapeshifting with his Elemental, Summoning, and Shape-shifting trees. Using the Elemental tree, he could use the magic of earth and sky to rain attacks on his enemies or buff himself with spells. The Summoning tree allowed him to call in wolves, spirits, and many other natural allies to aid him in Diablo 2 combat. Meanwhile, shape-shifting game players directly control his animal form and extra buffs as he turned into either a Werewolf or Werebear.
New classes were only the tip of the amount of content added when Lords of Darkness released. Diablo 2 expanded in story, size, and complexity, and it did not take long for fans to dive in and find secrets not listed in the game’s expansion log. Diablo 2: Resurrected will contain this additional content, but many fans wonder if the game’s hidden levels will still be present.
Diablo 2: Resurrected is being developed by Blizzard Entertainment.
