Even though it was a game from 2018, Among Us was one of the dominant titles of 2020. It just happened to be the multiplayer experience that everybody needed. It was easy to learn, familiar to most people who had played similar party games, and allowed lots of players to get in on the action. Now that it’s had such a surge of popularity, Among Us has a bright future ahead of it. Fans are eagerly anticipating the new map and everything else on the game’s development roadmap. That kind of anticipation means fans will be making their own content to celebrate the game, and that includes cosplays.
Among Us cosplays were all the rage over the last few months of 2020. Lots of fans made their own costumes and shared them all over social media while simultaneously making jokes about the game’s themes. However, a huge part of the fun of cosplays is sharing them at social gatherings like conventions. Most conventions in 2020 were cancelled due to the pandemic, so Among Us cosplays haven’t gotten their day in the sun. Thankfully, vaccinations are being rolled out, so if the pandemic is under control sometime in the near future, there might be another wave of Among Us cosplays when conventions start up again.
It’s pretty easy to do an Among Us cosplay. Lots of people put them together by simply wearing clothes all in one color to match the Crewmates’ uniforms. Some people invest in costume pieces like astronaut helmets and paint them whatever color they like, while others just put on goggles under a hood to imitate the Among Us uniform. Many of the cosmetics in Among Us are just everyday clothes and objects, too, so many of them are easy to substitute and imitate. It seems fitting that a game that’s so easy to get into is so easy to cosplay.
The trend naturally exploded in September and October when streamers first discovered Among Us, but there’s still lots of fans of the games putting cosplays together. It only seems logical that there will be new waves of cosplays as the game continues to get updates and it becomes easier to show off cosplays among other fans. Cosplayers are aching to go to conventions again, and having any amount of hope that conventions are once again on the horizon will spur cosplayers to action. It wouldn’t be surprising if fans started putting together even more elaborate getups than fans have seen so far.
Even if conventions are still a long ways away, Among Us cosplays are bound to remain popular. Cosplays for other media aren’t always easy. Sometimes they involve elaborate costume pieces and end up requiring the work of many people. Among Us cosplays are pretty easy to come up with, so they’re doable while continuing to social distance. It’s also a particularly good type of cosplay to do with friends of family that one lives with who also love the game. There’s lots of reasons that these cosplays will continue to flourish even if they can’t be shared at public gatherings.
Whenever a game like League of Legends comes out with new cosmetics and characters, someone wants to cosplay it. The same is true for Among Us. Now that the game is expanding rather than sitting in Steam unacknowledged and waiting for players, there’s bound to be a steady flow of content coming out that’ll inspire people in new ways. Updates may be slow for now as Innersloth restructures internally after the game’s surge to popularity. However, the game has lots of dedicated players, and the millions of sales on the Switch alone show that Among Us isn’t going anywhere. If the game is still staying afloat, then so will its cosplaying community.
Among Us is available now on mobile, PC, and Switch, with Xbox One and Xbox Series X versions coming in 2021.
