The Case for More Mortal Kombat 11 DLC | Game Rant

Mortal Kombat 11 has had a full life of DLC support, gaining three Kombat Packs worth of characters, tons of skins, and even an additional story mode. Fans have been showered with support since the game launched, and there’s no reason to suspect it’s done yet. With the new Mortal Kombat movie arriving in a couple months, it’s the perfect time for NetherRealm to drop some new DLC alongside it.

There are plenty of Kombatants throughout the franchise who could still make it in. Characters who were in Mortal Kombat 11‘s story mode like Sektor, Cyrax, and final boss Kronika could become playable, or some of the fighters from the PS2 era could start showing up again with new designs. If nothing else, it would be nice to see a modern take on the super-cop Stryker. The sky’s the limit, and with all of the polish and lore stuffed into every new face on the roster, no one would object to more.

After over a year of small updates, the trailer for the Mortal Kombat reboot movie has finally arrived, and it looks great. With it comes the chance to add some DLC fighters both new and old to the game. As the film is primarily adapting the plot of the original game, the four-armed Shotokan prince Goro once again shows up as Shang Tsung’s ace-in-the-hole. He would be welcome in the current cast, especially as it would give him the chance to finally hold a conversation on-screen with current Shotokan queen Sheeva.

Also potentially sighted was a cloaked Reptile, who was a hidden boss in the first MK and an assailant in the original movie. Fans have been asking for his return since the game’s premiere event, and have been receiving nothing but teases. Now that Mileena is in, it would be nice to see Reptile too.

But if there’s going to be a movie Kombat Pack, it may as well come with original movie content. Cole Young is the movie’s new face, a comparatively plain audience surrogate who is still able to throw a punch. While it remains to be seen how he fights in the movie, no doubt Mortal Kombat 11‘s developers can flex their creativity and come up with a fun, flashy, and ultraviolent moveset that will gain him fans and a spot in MK lore. Alongside him can be various skins recreating established characters’ appearances in the movie. Fans would no doubt be happy to give these new versions of Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Shang Tsung a whirl in the competitive arena.

There’s also a huge, largely untapped side of Mortal Kombat waiting to be explored in the reboot era: the PS2 and Xbox games. Mortal Kombat‘s 3D period is often regarded as a joke in the fighting game community, but not every fighter from it is a total waste. The winged vampiress Nitara may be returning in the new movie, and there are plenty other characters with character designs at least on her tier. Havik, Ashrah, and Drahmin are all standout designs that could make for great MK11 characters with a bit of tweaking. Boss characters Blaze and Onaga could also work, though Netherrealm would be better served saving them for future plots.

That said, if NetherRealm doesn’t care to save them, there’s the option of using another boss in a third story mode. This would take a lot longer than any regular Kombat Pack, but fans would be happy to see what the huge roster of minor characters has been up to while time is falling apart in the main story.

The remaining Mortal Kombat X Kombat kids, Takeda and Kung Jin, could take center stage. Players would get to resolve some trouble in a far-off corner of the multiverse like Chaosrealm, or some other situation that would make fans of the original MK games happy. It wouldn’t be terribly important compared to the fight with Kronika and the struggle for her crown, but it could lay the groundwork for the next game.

There are a lot of directions NetherRealm could take another round of Mortal Kombat 11 DLC, and if it isn’t moving on to Injustice 3 yet, then fans could see more in the coming few months. All of that, and there’s still the possibility of new guest characters, too. The MK11 roster is in a great spot, and it can only get better.

Mortal Kombat 11 is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Stadia, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
