As a new world-building engine within the PlayStation 4 console, Dreams allows its fans access to tools to create all-new possibilities within the universe of the game. And even though it has only been a year since the release of Dreams, in-game developers are already coming up with their own full-blown video games.
One novice game developer, known as Shane Marshall, shared a trailer on his YouTube page for his own self developed game titled MODI: Son of Thor that is out now for gamers to experience. In the sort of indie God of War type game, Asgard is on the brink of war, and Thor is dying, so the people have to put their hopes in the inexperienced young god Modi to save the day.
In the trailer, it shows off the different gameplay mechanics for how players can control Modi as he smashes skeletons with his hammer, shoots lightning, and even turns into lightning to jump into enemies and other objects. Marshall has been working on the game in Dreams since June 2020 and says that he will have a lot more updates for interested fans in the near future on his Twitter page.
On Reddit, Marshall goes into more detail about the game and what he wants people to take away from the trailer. In actuality, it is merely a quick tutorial of the basic controls of the game and to also test out the game tools. However, this was enough to gain the attention of the game developers Media Molecule, who gave it a highlight as the “Pick of the Week” in the game.
Marshall goes on to say that this demo is also unfinished. There are many bugs that need to be fixed, and many of the levels need polish. Marshall was inspired by prominent system architect Mark Cerny, where he wanted to show a chunk of gameplay to represent the bigger picture altogether. There will also be added functions and a new “Combat Trials” mode for gamers to play around with in the future.
Shane Marshall is a recent college graduate who specializes in 3D art and animation who is taking his time to experiment with game design in Dreams. Many fans took to the comments to express their respect for his craft, siting how impressive all the details are in such a short amount of time by himself. Hopefully, this experience is enough for him to one day land a career in the industry and make equally creative passion projects.
Dreams is now available exclusively for the PlayStation 4.
