Xbox One: The 13 Best Local Four-Player Games You Can Play Now

Gaming has always worked better when people are playing together. Experiencing what the game has to offer with someone else in-person has a certain, special quality to it that’s hard to replicate online. However, the option of playing with friends has been dwindling over the last few years, especially in this generation.

Local play is something of a luxury now, so when a game offers local play it’s a surprise. Fortunately, the Xbox One has a ton of options in terms of local play so there’s no shortage of fun. The good thing about local play on the Xbox One is that it’s fully supported, so here are some of the best local games that can be played on the Xbox One.

Updated On February 25th, 2021, By Jason Wojnar: With the new consoles now upon us, the number of games coming out for the older hardware will start to slow down. With this in mind, we decided to revisit this list and add a few more games Xbox One owners can enjoy locally with friends and family. While many developers do not see it as a priority, a lot of gamers are endlessly thankful for these games’ dedication to letting people enjoy them together on the same console. All anyone needs are the extra controllers.

13 Rare Replay (2015)

Gaming compilations aren’t as in vogue as they once were, but Rare Replay is definitely a collection worth buying. It comes packed in with a large handful of the developer’s greatest classic titles, from Banjo-Kazooie to Perfect Dark. The latter, along with several other games, offers four-player support. Perfect Dark is an especially welcome addition, since it is the spiritual successor to GoldenEye on the Nintendo 64. With a new game in the franchise announced, now is as good a time as ever to play Rare’s classic first-person shooter.

12 Borderlands: Handsome Jack Collection (2015)

Playing any Borderlands game split-screen in its original incarnation can be rough, slowing down the frame rate and graphical fidelity. The Handsome Jack Collection, which packages in Borderlands 2, all the DLC, and The Pre-sequel, lets you play four-player split-screen.

The frame rate still takes a hit, but it is a worthy sacrifice for some local mayhem. The first game in the franchise was also remastered for the modern consoles, so the whole series is now playable on Xbox One.

11 Streets Of Rage 4 (2020)

People expect to wait anywhere between two and four years for a sequel, but fans of beat ’em ups had to wait about 26 years to receive a sequel to Streets of Rage 3. By all accounts, it was well worth the wait. The combat retains the intuitive feel of the classics, being easy to understand while giving players constant room to improve. The aesthetic is also a delight to behold, exploding with personality on every level.

10 Castle Crashers (2008)

This isn’t a new game since it was first out on the Xbox 360, but Castle Crashers deserves to be on the list. This 2D button smashing game has very deep, and rich elements with a fully fleshed out story. Not a lot of local play games offer each player a sense of individualism in the way Castle Crashers does.

For up to four players, each player’s character has their own attributes and weapons. It’s also hard confusing who is who since each character has their own color that matches the gameplay for the characters.

9 Rocket League (2015)

While Rocket League can be played online, it works really well on the local level as well. The car and sports mashup is one of those games where anything can happen. The craziness of playing two-on-two with friends while playing soccer, basketball, or even hockey is unique to Rocket League.

Full customization, with licensed vehicles like the Batmobile, adds hours on top of hours of a good time. It’s no wonder why Rocket League is one of the better co-op games. The challenge also adds to the fun, though that should not deter newcomers from checking it out.

8 Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4 (2018)

Usually, triple-A games force players to buy the game if they want to play with friends. Call of Duty continues offering split-screen options, however. Given how Black Ops 4 is considered to be one of the best multiplayer games of 2018, it does make sense.

With the absence of a campaign, it’s the Zombies mode that really offers replay value. While going online and playing the battler royale mode Blackout or the typical online section are options as well. Having four players together in Zombies mode certainly makes things a little more manageable.

7 WWE 2K20 (2019)

While not the best sports game in 2k’s catalog, WWE 2K20 does have its upsides such as playing with friends using your favorite wrestler.  For all the single-player sections, it has a multiplayer counterpart like all the game modes all the events. Even better, all of these can be done with four players.

WWE 2K20 offers hours and hours of fun beating up your friends with iconic wrestlers like The Rock, Triple H, and many more. It can be fun for everyone, even if someone who is playing in the group doesn’t really like wrestling.

6 Rayman Legends (2013)

This 2D side scroller is really fun especially when there are more people helping out. The platformer offers a pretty fun story and an addictive play style that can be fun for everyone.

It’s even easy to learn since it only uses some of the buttons. With four players it can be a chaotic mess, but Rayman Legends isn’t like that at all. It’s a calm peaceful time with very fun challenges and puzzles that everyone will like.

5 Brawlhalla (2014)

Brawlhalla can be compared to Super Smash Bros, but it has its own charm. Like Super Smash Bros, it has its own set of iconic, licensed characters like Hellboy and Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft joining the fray.

It does offer the same quality of gameplay and excitement as Super Smash Bros, so there’s not much missing between the two brawlers. Adding four players adds to the chaos, with options like free for all or team play. The best part? Brawlhalla is free to play!

4 Minecraft (2009)

Despite being more than a decade old as of this writing, this “build-your-own-world” game is pretty popular and still highly regarded. Minecraft offers players to build their own world or cause havoc with other players. It’s a full package deal that can give local play a new meaning where players can do free play or missions.

Luckily, on the Xbox One, it’s one of the better co-op games on Game Pass, so it’s there for everyone. The survival aspect of the game adds to it, showing how real four player co-op can work.

3 NBA 2K20 (2019)

While playing a full game can be cumbersome, and a chore because there’s more going on and can be complicated. The blacktop is the go-to, with iconic players in a 2 on 2 is something that offers hours of play. Customization of the game modes plus using all the players in the game really adds a competitive nature.

When playing a full game, players would need to switch to other players because the ball is in their hands. But playing an unconventional 2 on 2 all players are the same character. It can show off who in the friend group is good.

2 Crash Team Racing Nitro Racing (2019)

Racing games are typically really good for playing with friends. However, Crash Team Nitro Racing offers a whole other element like Mario Kart, in the form of combat. What other way could friends take out each other with some creatively made weapons?.

Playing with Crash Bandicoot’s roster has something for everyone, and doing different modes, not just racing gives the game more replayability. Plus the racing alone is pretty hectic with the insane tracks the game has already. One thing’s for sure: Crash Team Nitro Racing is a fun mess.

1 The Halo Franchise

Halo is, without a doubt, the best of the best and one of the most iconic games of our time. Each Halo game offers the whole experience to four players. Playing some of the best campaigns in gaming promises days of fun and so does playing on some iconic maps locally but still, team-based gameplay adds a unique sense of fun that only co-op can achieve.

Each game in the series has so much content for the four players that it can be hard to play something. Reliving the iconic moments with Master Chief will always be an enjoyable time for both newcomers and veterans.
