Anthony Mackie Was ‘Afraid’ To Make The Falcon And The Winter Soldier

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, which stars Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, is set to drop on Disney Plus this March. However, Mackie recently revealed that he initially didn’t want the series to happen and had to be convinced to reprise his role in the Marvel Studios series.

The six-hour series centers on Mackie’s Sam Wilson and Stan’s Bucky Barnes, taking place after the events of Avengers: Endgame and exploring who the rightful successor to Captain America should be. At the end of Avengers: Endgame, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) retired and gave Wilson his Captain America Shield. Despite being handled the mantle, Mackie claims that Falcon hadn’t agreed to become Captain America.

Kari Skogland (Fifty Dead Men Walking) directed the new The Falcon and the Winter Soldier while Malcolm Spellman (Our Family Wedding) served as the showrunner. Spellman has stated that while the show will have a buddy-cop feel, it will also touch on larger societal issues. Emily VanCamp will star alongside Mackie and Stan, reprising her role as Peggy Carter’s niece, Sharon Carter, who first appeared in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. One of the main antagonists in the series is rumored to be Sokovian terrorist Baron Helmut Zemo (played by Daniel Brühl). The supporting cast also includes Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street), Noah Mills (2 Broke Girls), and Carl Lumbly (Doctor Sleep).

In a recent interview with SFX Magazine, Mackie said he had “trepidation from the beginning” and was “really afraid” of the idea at first. “Working on so many Marvel projects, and seeing the end result and the effect that they have on people, I was afraid that the quality of the production would be taken down for television,” said Mackie. “I was afraid that you can’t do things on television that you can do in theatres.”

Mackie also noted that after Marvel Studios hired Spellman and Skogland, he knew the project was going to be unique. Praising both Spellman and Skogland for their leadership and writing skills, Mackie noted that Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige assured him the quality of the Disney Plus shows would be on par with the MCU films. “He’s not going to tarnish the Marvel brand by trying to just blow out as much content as he could. And I trusted him on that,” Mackie stated, adding that he hasn’t been let down yet and ultimately decided to take a leap of faith and join the project because of their past work. He ended up being “pleasantly surprised by how great everything turned out.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’s Super Bowl trailer broke numerous records. It drew over 125 million views in just 24 hours, which was more than Black Widow’s 119 million and WandaVision’s 53 million. The aforementioned WandaVision was the first of many MCU series’ that will premier on the Disney streaming service. Marvel Present Kevin Feige announced last year that at least 14 new Marvel shows are in the works. Loki, the animated series What If…?, as well as Ms. MarvelMoon Knight, and Hawkeye are expected to be released within the next two years.

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier debuts on Disney Plus on March 19, 2021.
