Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Season 2 just launched, adding a slew of new content to both Black Ops Cold War as well as the Call of Duty: Warzone battle royale. While this influx of new content is always a great way to keep fans engaged as well as bring back lapsed players, it also contributes to a growing problem with the Call of Duty games. The file sizes are ballooning to the point where some players are literally incapable of having both Modern Warfare and Black Ops Cold War installed at the same time.
Activision acknowledged this problem, pointing out that gamers with a standard 500 GB PlayStation 4 console will likely have to make some space by deleting specific content from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare or Black Ops Cold War. For Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, players can navigate to the File Management menu by clicking in the right stick at the main menu. This will take players to a screen that lets them remove content that they don’t use, like the campaign, multiplayer, or Zombies.
Something similar can be done for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and the Warzone battle royale, though the method of getting to the file management screen is a little different. For that game, players need to go to Options in the main menu, then go to the General tab. From here, players can go to Game Installs, and then they are free to delete whatever they don’t use anymore, choosing from campaign, multiplayer, or the Spec Ops co-op mode.
It’s great that there are ways players can reduce the Call of Duty file size, but at the same time, it can be frustrating that players can’t have both of their games installed on a single console. Unfortunately, it seems as though the Call of Duty file size issue will only continue to get worse as the months go on, so anyone that wants the full Call of Duty experience along with other games will likely need to invest in a storage upgrade of some kind.
While one would think that the storage problems for the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare side of things would have been solved right now, they’re not thanks to Warzone being technically part of the Modern Warfare install. And there are rumors that Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 7 is on the way, bringing with it new multiplayer maps, Soap as a playable Operator, and more content, which will make that game’s file size even bigger.
Even if the Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Season 7 rumors are false, though, the Call of Duty file sizes will remain an issue for the foreseeable future.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is out now for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
