The Sims Celebrating 21st Birthday with Community-Made Content

Life-simulation franchise The Sims turns 21 today, and Electronic Arts is celebrating in The Sims 4 with the help of some community creators. The franchise now spans four titles and a whopping 60 pieces of DLC across all titles, ranging from furniture content to fully-fledged expansion packs that bring new avenues of life to the celebrated series.

This appears to be one of the few times that Electronic Arts recognizes the work of modders within its titles, though it is worth noting that community content has gone hand-in-hand with The Sims 4 markedly more than other titles in its repertoire. The celebration includes an interview with all nine creators regarding the history of the content offered for the 21st anniversary.

For the 21st anniversary of The Sims, Electronic Arts is adding twenty-one pieces of content that were created entirely by the community. Featuring toddler clothes, greater facial editing options, and a dazzling array of furniture, EA brings nine creators to the spotlight that have used The Sims 4 as a creative outlet to the benefit of the community at large. The update releasing today is free, although players will need to have the title up to date in order to explore the new content added.

The Sims 4 is now almost seven years old, although it currently has the most DLC packages currently available for purchasing, showing an evolution of Electronic Arts and how it plans on supporting its titles moving forward. Last year, Electronic Arts celebrated the twentieth anniversary of The Sims with a new hot tub that prominently featured the classic emerald-green plumbob indicator in the woodwork.

The Sims released on February 4, 2000, making this celebration about 21-days late, but perhaps that was just offering Electronic Arts the space it needs to craft up the special celebration launched today. The Sims franchise has been slowing in terms of core titles that once released roughly every five years: The Sims 2 launched on September 14, 2004, followed by The Sims 3 on June 2, 2009, leading to the current iteration The Sims 4 in 2014.

EA celebrating its community for the anniversary celebration has resounded well with the community, requesting the studio to further entertain and highlight community creators on a monthly basis. Electronic Arts taking more responsibility in the curation and proposal of community content could encourage members to participate in the scene while ensuring the safety of all participants.

The Sims 4 is available now for PC, PS4, and the Xbox One.
