The way Outriders does motion blur is giving people a headache.
Following brief problems with server logins, the release of the Outriders demo went fairly well. Away from connection issues, however, the PC version exhibits a number of problems.
One such issue is Outriders’ excessive use of motion blur, which not only makes it hard to spot enemies, it gives the illusion of a lower framerate than what you’re actually getting. This is mostly apparent when sprinting, where the motion blur effect becomes something out of a Need for Speed game.
I am not usually a motion blur hater, and keep it on most of the time, but even I got a bit of a headache from Outriders’ implementation of the tech. The good news is that players will able to toggle it off in the full game at launch.
But PC players may not have to wait until then, however, as there’s a fairly easy config file edit that gets rid of motion blur, and a few other post-processing effects, should you choose.
How to turn off motion blur in Outriders on PC
Navigate to C:\Users\[your user name]\AppData\Local\Madness\Saved\Config\WindowsNoEditor. Open both Engine.ini, and Gameusersettings.ini with a text editor. At the bottom of both files add individual lines for the follow:
- [SystemSettings] r.MotionBlurQuality=0
- r.FastBlurThreshold=0
- r.BlurGBuffer=0
The two pages can also be used to add more lines and turn off other effects, such as r.DepthOfFieldQuality=0 for depth of field, and r.SceneColorFringeQuality=0 for chromatic aberration.
This week, we spoke to developers from People Can Fly, the makers of Outriders, about the team’s ambitions to expand the game without relying on live service, and why the studio insisted on having a complete, compelling story.
