One of the more unique properties to be released in this era of Marvel shows: Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K is an animated comedy show that’s been in the works for a while now, starring one of the Marvel Universe’s more unusual villains. The show stars Patton Oswalt as the titular Mental Organism Designed Only for Killing, and purports to be an irreverent comedy about a failed supervillain trying to hold his life together.
The show has been in production for some time now, partially due to the fact that it is entirely filmed in stop-motion, an impressive, but grueling animation technique that takes quite some time to perfect. Along the production cycle, however, there has been quite a lot of talk about what the show will be like and how it fits into the broader suite of the Marvel canon.
Those who have been devouring each episode of WandaVision may be slightly disappointed to hear that Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. is not tied to the MCU, at least not in any explicit way. The show will take place within the Marvel universe, but won’t have any direct ties to the continuity established by the live-action films, similar to how Fox’s X-Men films existed within the same IP as the MCU, but were not connected until recently.
That doesn’t mean the show isn’t worth watching however, as the trailer does make it seem like a pretty good time. Even with the few scenes shown, it seems to be going after a similar feel to the Harley Quinn show from DC; with a more humorous take on what it means to be a career supervillain when you’re not actively fighting people 24/7.
As the trailer reveals, things aren’t going great for M.O.D.O.K. Despite raising an entire criminal organization staffed with a henchman, he’s broke, and he’s not as great a boss as he’d like, struggling to manage the people around them. The synopsis continues on to mention that M.O.D.O.K. is expelled as the leader of his empire and is forced to deal both with the loss of his power, and his own crumbling family life.
The trailer also revealed the release date for the show, which is coming exclusively to Hulu. Anyone interested in seeing how M.O.D.O.K. plans to get out this one only has to wait until Friday, May 21, when all ten episodes of the first season will drop at the same time.
Marvel’s M.O.D.O.K. premieres only on Hulu on May 21st.
