Sony may soon release an update that will improve the PlayStation 5’s fan speed and enable players to upgrade its storage space. It is welcome news for many PS5 owners, who have wanted a way to increase the PS5’s storage since the console was released last November.
In October 2020, a month before the PS5’s release, Sony said that it would optimize the console’s fans in future updates. The PS5 comes with a double-sided air intake fan that is 125mm in diameter and 45mm thick. Three temperature sensors located on the console’s mainboard and an additional sensor in its APU monitor heat level and control the speed of the cooling fans. It is these fan control parameters that Sony will tweak with future updates, which can include adjusting the fan speed to keep the PS5 cool when games take longer to load.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Sony will add support for additional storage drives via a firmware update that will also increase the speed of the console’s cooling fans. After the firmware update is released, players will have to remove the PS5’s outer plastic cover to attach a new storage unit. As far as what storage device will be compatible with the PS5, players will need a M.2 SSD storage drive. The update to the fans will help ensure that the console stays cool during long load times. The update is expected to release this summer.
While Sony has not officially announced these plans, the news is likely to be true, as players have desired a way to upgrade the PS5’s storage space since it was released and Sony already confirmed that it would update the fans. The console comes with 825GB of storage, but only 667GB can be used for game files. Fans feel that this is not enough, especially considering that many current generation games take up more than 100GB of space and only run using the PS5’s internal storage.
PS5 consoles are still in short supply, even months after it released, and some industry insiders have suggested that the shortage will continue into the second half of 2021. Top employees from both Sony and Microsoft have said that the ongoing console shortages were partially brought on by complications from the coronavirus pandemic, which has slowed production of the components necessary to build the PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Sony and Microsoft recently joined 15 other companies and organizations, including the US Chamber of Commerce, to send a letter to the White House asking for help with the shortage. President Joe Biden is expected to sign an executive order that will launch a 100-day investigation into semiconductor supply chains related to the shortages.
