The Nintendo Wii is one of the more memorable consoles of the past few decades. As Nintendo constantly creates technology wrapped around the idea of fun, the Wii was designed to bring joy to a wide range of audiences with games like Wii Sports, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, Mario Kart Wii, and even the Mii Channel.
The Mii Channel, in particular, is something that many spent countless hours on, creating Mii characters for all of their friends, family members, celebrities, etc. The music on the channel was one aspect to this day gets stuck into the head of those who enjoyed time in it way back in 2006, and one Twitter user just released an amazing remix of the tune.
Alex Moukala is a music producer and composer, and also a pretty big video game fan. He recently put together a funky remix of the Mii Channel theme, and it has taken off. Moukala has aspirations to one day score music for Final Fantasy; he is showing he has the chops to do so.
Along with sending out the video itself, Mouakala thought his work would sound even better with other instruments and asked other musicians to add their work. Although Muakala’s solo jam is incredible, the results from other musicians joining in have been remarkable as well. One string of videos, specifically, has multiple people continually adding more music and the culmination of this experiment was a beautiful quintet. In fact, with the new addition of a stringed instrument, the tunes almost sound like it could have been music from a Super Mario game, perhaps something like a Mario Kart, for example.
Video game composers have even gotten in on the action, like Sonic Mania composer Tee Lopes. Just hearing everyone’s different takes on the classic Mii Channel theme is extremely entertaining; especially those who are seasoned within the industry.
Celeste is considered one of the better indie games of the past decade, and the composer of that game, Lena Raine, also joined in on the fun as well. Alex Moukala captured something special here, and it goes much beyond his funky tunes. While his Mii Channel remix is extremely catchy, the idea of sharing that music online and allowing others to play off of it is a wonderful community-building exercise. It is possible to spend hours on the feed listening to what others have come up with thanks to the creativity that he started.
