Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies has been well received by the survival mode’s loyal community thus far, though its Easter eggs have been a bit divisive due to their short length and relative ease. However, Treyarch has confirmed that Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War Zombies Easter eggs are different for a huge reason.
In the past, Call of Duty Zombies Easter eggs have been as complex as it gets. Requiring 30-minute videos to watch and including complex puzzles involving things like morse code, players had to do a lot of work to unlock the final cutscene. It seems like this complexity and need for online guides had a major impact on the number of players that completed the quests, however, as many simply looked up the cutscene online to see where the where the story was going next.
In an interview with IGN India, Treyarch Creative Director Corky Lehmkuhl has confirmed why long Easter eggs are a thing of the past. According to the developer, “less than two percent of players” were seeing the Easter eggs play out in their own games. With an incredibly small portion of the Zombies player base experiencing the old main quests despite the work that went into making them, Treyarch’s “mission” to make Easter eggs more accessible is understandable.
According to Lehmkuhl, this decision is making a difference thus far. Pointing to YouTube and Reddit for proof, Lehmkuhl states that “a lot of people are completing their first Easter eggs, ever,” with some having been with Call of Duty Zombies since its inception. Calling Cards in multiplayer matches tied to Easter egg completion are also becoming much more common, something that shows that Treyarch’s decision made sense. Though Treyarch wants to keep some side quests obscure and hard to find, it plans to continue this decision moving forward.
While Firebase Z’s quest lacking a trophy is a bit disappointing, everything else about it has been praised by fans. Pushing the story forward while offering a surprise boss fight and several memorable steps, it seems like Treyarch’s new strategy of having shorter objectives that “make sense with the narrative” will continue going forward. Though some old school players may miss the days-long Easter egg hunts and confusing or difficult things that had to be done in order to make progress, it seems like this setup satisfies much more of the player base.
With the new Outbreak Zombies mode set to see a main quest and side Easter eggs added during Season 3, it will be interesting to see what Treyarch can do with the large-scale maps. When these quests come, though, players can now expect them to be manageable.
Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is available now on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
