Overwatch: Who is Soundquake? | Game Rant

The Overwatch universe is full of interesting characters, both inside and outside of the game. Characters like the Junker Queen have left a major impact on the franchise’s lore despite not actually being playable themselves, with fans constantly wondering when some of these important characters will make their debut within the hero shooter. While lore teases have come for many characters that have not yet been seen in the game, one of the most interesting is Soundquake.

Overwatch fans know far less about Soundquake than they do about other rumored additions like the Junker Queen or the fox hero Yokai, though they are still aware of enough to be interested in seeing the character’s debut. With a unique appearance, powerful abilities, and loyalties to Overwatch, players have been wondering if the character would ever become more than a throwaway reference. Intriguingly, the concept for Soundquake may be making an appearance in Overwatch 2, but not as a playable character. Regardless of whether he comes, though, this is what fans currently know about Soundquake.

Soundquake is briefly mentioned in Overwatch’s Cinematic Trailer by the young boy Timmy, with the fan of Overwatch‘s heroes confirming through dialogoue that Soundquake was a member of Overwatch. Though it is unclear it Soundquake died, retired, or is still fighting somewhere, Timmy confirmed that one of his signature abilities saw him firing off “chest missiles” in a way that sounds much like Pharah’s Rocket Barrage. Pieces of concept art have also shown that Soundquake was massive, roughly the size of Reinhardt, and his most distinguishable feature was a large rhino-like horn on top of his head.

As of now, it is unclear if Soundquake was an Omnic or a human in a beefy set of armor, though the former seems more likely based on the art shown thus far. Boasting a red, yellow, and black color scheme, the character would undoubtedly be a tank hero. The design on his armor also implies that he would have been loyal to Numbani, possibly serving as a protector — an idea that eventually was used in Orisa’s backstory. Intriguingly, D.Va has a picture of Soundquake as her screensaver in the map Busan, implying some kind of connection between the two. This has been the only in-game nod to the character thus far, however.

Overwatch fans have started to think that Soundquake could become a playable character inside the upcoming sequel, as a recent Overwatch 2 rumor suggests that the Behemoth PvE enemy will be used as a basis for his character model. Considering the resemblance between the two, as the enemy Omnic has the same horn seen in the concepts for Soundquake along with being a similar size, this is not a bad theory. Further, PvE missions like Uprising using alternate versions of Orisa and Bastion as enemies adds to this theory.

That said, this Overwatch 2 PvE enemy resembling Soundquake so closely could simply be Blizzard making use of an unused concept. After all, Soundquake’s abilities have been used in other heroes. As mentioned above, Pharah already uses chest missiles, while Soundquake’s horn would imply a move that sees him charging at enemies — an ability wielded by Reinhardt. With Orisa taking on Soundquake’s potential origins and backstory as well, it is possible that the hero will never actually be playable. It seems like his story, design, and powers have been split between several characters, meaning that Blizzard reimagining Soundquake as PvE’s Behemoth boss makes sense.

Still, while the concept for Soundquake certainly could be getting reused as an omnic boss and little else, fans clinging on to hope that Soundquake will debut in Overwatch 2 should not give up hope just yet. After all, demand for the character Doomfist helped make playing as him a reality, with the same mentality possibly seeing Soundquake become a controllable tank as opposed to unused concept art or a PvE enemy. For now, though, fans will just have to wait and see what the future holds for this briefly mentioned member of the Overwatch team.

Overwatch is available now on PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
